Entertaining Angels Unawares

Last week, I read the testimony of a well-known influencer who wrote publicly of how he and his wife had chosen to abort their child at twenty-one weeks because the baby had Down syndrome.

What grieved me most was not merely the decision itself, but the reasoning behind it. The child was portrayed as one destined for a life of suffering. The parents presented themselves as the ones bearing the tragedy. The act was framed as an expression of mercy, as though death were somehow kinder than life, and as though the child had been spared a fate worse than the grave.

I closed the article and sat quietly for some time.

Not because I wished to argue.

Not because I was angry.

But because I knew something they did not know.

Or perhaps I should say, something they never gave themselves the opportunity to discover.

Thirty-three years ago, my wife and I found ourselves standing before the very same unknown future.

We too had a child with Down syndrome.

We too were unprepared.

We too were shocked.

We too wondered what lay ahead.

But we did not know then what we know now.

We did not know that what the world might call a burden, heaven would call a blessing.

We did not know that what men might measure by limitation, God had measured by love.

We did not know that our son Daniel would become one of the greatest treasures our family would ever receive.

Most of all, we did not know that God Himself would speak into our fear.

There are seasons in the life of the saint when the clouds gather thickly overhead, and the path seems hedged about with sorrow. The Lord, in His wisdom, does not always reveal the end from the beginning. He often leads His children one step at a time, teaching them to walk by faith and not by sight.

More than thirty years ago, my wife and I found ourselves in such a season.

Our first child had been taken from us. Another had suffered terrible burns. The wounds of those events had not altogether healed when our son Daniel was born. We had not known beforehand that he would have Down syndrome. There had been no warning, no preparation. The discovery came suddenly, and with it came fears of an unknown future.

Within hours of his birth he was taken to the children’s hospital. I remained by his side through the night, watching and praying. Yet my heart was heavy. Questions crowded in where faith ought to have reigned.

On the Sunday morning I went to church carrying a burden that seemed too great for me. The congregation numbered in the thousands. The worship began with the words, “God will make a way where there seems to be no way,” and for a moment my weary soul found some small measure of comfort.

Then the singing ceased.

It was a day appointed for the dedication of infants.

One by one the parents came forward, carrying their children in their arms. All around me were smiles and rejoicing. Mothers and fathers beamed with gratitude. The congregation looked on with delight.

Yet I sat in the midst of them feeling altogether alone.

The tears came quietly. Tears of a weary pilgrim who could not yet discern the purpose of the road upon which he had been led.

There was an empty seat beside me.

Suddenly someone tapped me upon the shoulder.

A note was placed into my hand.

Looking up, I saw a young woman some distance away smiling gently toward me. I unfolded the paper and read these words:

“I couldn’t help but notice that you were crying. Is there something I could pray with you about?”

I had no desire to speak. Yet the empty seat beside me seemed an like an invitation. I beckoned her forward, and she came and sat down.

“What is wrong?” she asked.

I began to explain.

“We just had a baby, he has Down syndrome.”

At once a puzzled expression crossed her face.

I remember feeling almost irritated. Here I was carrying the weight of a mountain, and now I must explain to this young girl what Down syndrome was.

Yet as I looked upon her, the face became covered by something of an aura. The face before me was no longer merely the face of the young woman who had come to comfort me. There was a light, a majesty, a holy tenderness shining through it and I knew, with a knowing beyond reason, that I was entertaining an angel.

And when the vouce came, it was not she who spoke, but the Lord Himself.

“Frank,” He said, “I do not know what Down syndrome is either. All I know is that I have given you a perfect gift from the treasures of heaven.”

Then the moment passed.

But the words remained.

Indeed, they remain still.

My heart exploded with love.

Years have come and gone since that day. Daniel is now a grown man. Looking back across the decades, I can testify that those words were so true.

The world saw a diagnosis.

Heaven presented a gift.

The world saw limitations.

Heaven saw unlimited treasure.

The world measured according to earth’s wisdom.

Heaven measured according to eternal riches.

Daniel has brought more love into our family than I could ever describe. He has taught us tenderness, patience, mercy, and joy. His laughter has filled our home. His kindness has softened our hearts. His presence has been a continual reminder that God’s gifts are not always wrapped according to man’s expectations.

How often we tremble before circumstances that afterwards become our sweetest blessings.

How often we start out fearing the very thing through which God intends to reveal His goodness.

And how often heaven’s treasures arrive disguised as earthly trials.

Whether the young woman remained simply a vessel, or whether I had entertained one of heaven’s messengers unawares, I cannot say. Yet this I know: the Lord Himself spoke comfort to a weary father exactly when it was needed. He opened a window to heaven and allowed a ray of eternal light to shine into a darkened heart.

And now, after all these years, I would not exchange the gift He gave me for any other.

If had been offered a healing that day I may have taken it, not realizing that what was already given was perfect.

If someone offered me the same choice today, I would refuse without a moment’s thought.

For the child I once feared for has become one of the chief instruments of God’s grace in our family.

The child whom some would have pitied has brought immeasurable joy.

The child whom others might have considered a burden has proven to be a blessing beyond measure.

For Daniel has indeed proven to be what I was told that morning:

A perfect gift from the treasures of heaven.

Perhaps some of God’s greatest gifts arrive in forms we do not immediately recognize. Perhaps the blessing stands before us while our eyes are fixed upon the burden. Perhaps the angel sits beside us while we are occupied with our grief.

And so we learn, slowly and often through tears, that our Father’s wisdom is greater than our fears, His love deeper than our understanding, and His gifts better than our requests.

For some, indeed, have entertained angels unawares.

The God gene?

Posted by appolus on March 23, 2014

On the 21st it was Down Syndrome day. The 21st representing the fact that Down Syndrome people have an extra copy of chromosome 21. I am the father of a young man with Down Syndrome , Daniel , who will be 21 this year. The word ” extra,” is interesting to me. Daniel is not missing anything, he has an extra chromosome. Now as the world measures things he has something missing, intellect. Yet, when he looks at the world he is cScan_Pic0160olor blind. He is incapable of being racist. He loves equally. Men, woman, the old, the young, the rich, the poor, the infirm, the mentally or physically handicapped, Daniel sees none of that, he only sees people.

This extra Chromosome allows him to view the world as God views the world. My son is happy and contented. I have watched other children mock him sometimes and burned inside, and then he would come in and tell me how much he liked them and that they were his friends. He would bear no ill will or grudges towards them and the very next day approach them and embrace them. This rarely made his Christian father happy.

Three days after he was born, in the midst of great turmoil and darkness the Lord Himself came and whispered in my ear ” I have given you a perfect gift from the treasures of heaven.” This is the clearest word I have ever had from the Lord.Daniel, exactly who he was, was made perfectly by the designer of all that exists. Daniel indeed has something extra, it is God given and I could only wish that I viewed the world through his eyes.

This group of people are not people who have an illness, they are a race of unique people with something extra. And that something extra should help us reevaluate how we measure perfection. If God is no respector of persons, if He loves all equally , then who is closer to the heart of God? Daniel or his dad? Without a doubt, Daniel is closer to the heart of God and I an observer and one who learns from those who have something extra, a God gene. He does not have less than me, I have less than he.

Tears of my Father.

Posted by appolus on August 25, 2008

I have a fifteen year old son Daniel who has Down Syndrome.  One week before Daniel was born,(we did not know we were having a Down Syndrome baby) I came home from church on a Sunday afternoon , full of the Holy Spirit. The Lord whispered in my ear to sit down with a pen and write whatever He put on my heart. I was to write to my Mom and Dad, I had no idea what I was going to write.

A Vision from God,Building the Army

You have gathered here today in defiance of darkness and tyranny. You have come here to fight as free men and free men you are, for it is I that gave you that very freedom. Your Worship, is it merely Noise?

Posted by appolus on June 27, 2008

There is a time for shouting and praising God, but if we are ignoring the knocking, then we must stop shouting. If our lives are not reflecting the Glory of God, if we are not becoming like His Son, daily, then all of our shouting and praising God will just be so much noise. How tragic for the church of the living God if, when He looks down, He does not see praise but just a group of people making a noise.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Tribulation is at the Door

“Jesus has many who love His kingdom in heaven, but few who bear His cross. He has many who desire comfort, but few who desire suffering. He finds many to share His feast, but few His fasting. All desire to rejoice with Him, but few are willing to suffer for His sake. Many follow Jesus to the breaking of the bread, but few to the drinking of the cup of His passion. Many admire the miracles, but few follow Him to the humiliation of the cross. Many love Jesus as long as no hardship touches them.”

A vision and a Word from God

Posted by appolus on June 20, 2008

This is a vision that I had as I stood on a terrace in Croatia. My wife and I went there last year on our 25th anniversary. Before I went the Lord had shown me that I would meet someone there and that it would be significant, just did not know that He was talking about Himself. The whole piece was my vision, He gave me a new way of writing my testimony and of writing about coming into His presence, then the Word that He gave me for the church, I wrote in red at the end. I pray that this will challenge and convict you………….

The Tyranny of Insignificance

The Spirit of Conviction

Posted by appolus on May 14, 2008

It is a great wonder that some of the most riveting and memorable stories in the Bible are not about “good folk.” The Lord had came down from heaven to highlight love and grace and mercy and redemption. How better to do that than on the canvas of some of the greatest sinners. Against the blackness of these lives we see the brilliance and the total majesty of grace. When one goes into a jewelers and looks at diamonds, most times they are shown against black velvet. The blackness of the background only highlights the beauty and perfection of the gems. In much the same way Jesus chose those folk with black backgrounds to highlight the utter beauty of a love that ignores the vileness of the gutter, the sewers of life, to demonstrate the indescribable grace and mercy of God .He would not only condescend to come to a dark earth, but would go right into the hells of our society, not with condemnation but with open loving forgiving arm. Praise God I speak not from theory.

A Word from God (Go Beyond what you Know)

My Testimony “The Valley of Achor.” (Lengthy)

Posted by appolus on April 25, 2008

When there was no food on the table, she told us that we had to believe and that the Lord would provide, and then we would hear a letter dropping. We would rush to the door and there would be an envelope with money in it. We found out years later that a wonderful woman in Christ would often be led by Jesus to put her tithe in an envelope and drop it through our door. No name, just obedience to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Posted by appolus on April 9, 2008

“It was this experience, twelve years later and in a state of alcoholic and drugged desperation, that I remembered. I thought about the love that I had felt all those years ago when the Lord had took over me for a few moments, I thought about the witness of my mother, who continued on with Christ despite all her many trials, I thought about the love and the peace and the tranquility of that moment that I had felt, and suddenly I longed for a safe harbor from the raging storms of my mind. I decided to find Jesus and ask Him to take my life, such as it was. I did find Him, He did take it and now, 18 years after that I have been priveleged to walk beside Him.”

Hope In Jesus

Jesus, conquering hero!!

Posted by appolus on March 26, 2008

A single tear falls from the Fathers face as He sees His Son return victorious. As the Father stands, Jesus, riding His majestic white stallion with a two-edged sword at His side, sees His Father. He lifts His head up towards the light and the glory. His horse majestically walks the path avoiding the golden crowns that lie beneath its feet, undisturbed by the cheers of the thousands, no the millions. And they sing “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God almighty.” Read the rest of this entry »

Baptize me in your Fire Lord, that I may light the world

Posted by appolus on March 18, 2008

Do you have the grace and the faith but most especially the love to be able to fulfill your role? Are you cloaked in an armor of light? Jesus is the light, are you covered by Him? Are you dealing with difficult people right now? Have you been hurt and offended? Breathe deeply brothers and sisters, yes take it in and breathe out life giving love in response.

You have been supernaturally created to be able to take this poison, take this toxicity and expel love and light in its place. It is our calling. When we stand before the Lord , I am fully convinced that this will be our offering to Him. For where is the reward on this earth to take the insult?

Sometimes we ask why.

Sometimes we would question ,”why Lord”, but there is always a reason. The lord cried from the cross “my God ,my God, why has thou forsaken me”, at that very point He touched man’s lowest ebb, despair, hell itself.
