(1Th 1:6-7) And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were examples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia.
The Thessalonians suffered much. They received the Word of God in the midst of much hostility. You might say that they were born again in the midst of the fire. And yet what do we see? Joy. The supernatural joy of the Lord has nothing to do with circumstances. I have no doubt that joy filled the hearts of Paul and Silas in the dungeon, as they laid there beaten and broken in body for the sake of Christ. They rejoiced, they worshiped and down came the power of God. The Apostles rejoiced after being scourged as they could not believe how privileged they were to be counted worthy to suffer for the sake of Christ. Joy in the midst of the fire. Holy Spirit enabled joy. It is the mark of the saint who is full of the Holy Spirit no doubt. Stephen, a man full of the Holy Spirit had a remarkable vision in the very midst of the cruelest and most vicious of deaths. Even as that was unfolding, there was one standing by, witnessing the martyr and how he died, Saul, who would become Paul. He saw the power of God in the death of Stephen.
The Thessalonians were “examples,” to all who believed in Macedonia and Achaia. In this case they were witnesses to other brothers and sisters throughout the region and these other saints would no doubt have been convicted and encouraged by the joy the Thessalonians had when there should be no joy. The word “examples,” from the Scripture above is from the Greek word ‘Tupos,” which means to be struck, to be stamped or to be scarred. It comes from the primary verb “Tupto,” which means to be cudgeled or pummeled or to suffer repeated blows. When we suffer repeated blows for the cause of Christ and respond with supernatural joy, it deals a blow to principalities and powers. Their kingdoms are shaken to their foundations. It is like a spiritual earthquake because this defies the natural realities of this world. It is supernatural. It is extraordinary. The greatest example of all being Calvary. The whole world and the unseen kingdoms would be turned upside down by Jesus on the cross. “Forgive them Father,’ Jesus cries out. And the last words of Stephen? “Lord Jesus receive my spirit, Lord do not hold this sin against them.”
The power of God. The power of the Holy Spirit. The example of Jesus. The examples of the Thessalonians. The examples of the Apostles. The example of the martyrs down through the ages. How about us brothers and sisters? Are we not filled with the same Holy Spirit? Have we not been endued with the same power from on High? Shall we not rejoice in the Lord and again I say rejoice? Shall we not rejoice in all things and give thanks in all things? For in these continual blows, when we are pummeled for the sake of Christ shall we not bear the scars with great pride? Shall we not stand in the midst of the fire with love and with joy and with thanksgiving? This is our calling brothers and sisters. It is a royal calling. It is a calling to a royal priesthood, a chosen people, a holy nation. We are Gods special possession and He has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light that we may declare the praises of Him who called us out. Praises on the mountaintop are good. Praises and joy and thanksgiving in the depths of the valley, though you be lower, are so much higher. All of heaven resounds to hear the praises of God on the lips of those who are in the midst of the fire.
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Let the word of Christ Himself dwell in you richly, in all abundance, let it become the treasure of your heart. Men horde money, let the saints gather up, with every effort, the word of God and hide it away in the depths of you. And so the peace of God shall rule in our hearts as we put on the new man and the old man dies. The old mans treasure will ruin our ability to gather the new mans treasure. Only by moving in the riches of Christ can the riches of Christ rule and reign in our hearts. Christ Jesus Himself, the preeminent one. If He holds the highest place in your heart then you shall walk in an abundance of wisdom and knowledge and you shall be like a fruitful branch to Him, producing much fruit.
And those who so walk shall “teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” You will sing with grace in your hearts and with love towards God. And in the singing of the psalms and the writing of the hymns and poems we shall convey truth to one another and admonish one another and in doing all that we do it within the confines of the Word of God. And the works of God and His fruit shall be manifested in the life of the genuine believer. A word of wisdom, a word of knowledge, a prophecy, a psalm a spiritual song. Paul wonders why, when they all gather, each has a teaching, a psalm, a tongue, a revelations and so forth. How far we have fallen. Now we rarely see, if ever, any of the aforementioned gifts in the gathering, rather it is stifled by the one man system that is in direct contradiction of the commands of God “Let two or three prophets speak,” Imagine, two or three exhortations whether to reveal or admonish. Two or three spiritual songs or psalms or hymns. Imagine what God could do if we banished the clergy/laity divide and the one man system that stifles and silences the saints in direct violation of Gods word. Imagine.
Many years ago, in the depths of a very dark situation with my oldest son, I received a vision of his deliverance (14 more years would pass before its fulfillment) It was a clear word from the Lord to me and I hung onto that with all of my strength, with everything that was in me. Day followed day and the months rolled by and then the years passed. Long days and short years. And with every passing year the situation got worse and my strength was failing me. It was then that I suddenly realized that I was not hanging onto Him, He was holding on to me. There is a hand that holds you brothers and sisters. It is the hand of Jesus. Take courage today, He is the one holding you and He shall never grow weary.
(Col 3:1-3) If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
This verse starts out with the word “if.” This is just to clarify that the magnificent truths of the Gospel can only ever apply to those who are genuinely born again. And if we are genuinely born again then we are called to have this mind-set, the mindset of Heaven and of God. Our eyes are to be drawn upwards as we seek the manifest glory of God and to be conformed to His image. The seat of all our affections are entirely up to us. What do we seek? Where do we look? What captures our attention? What do you fill your mind with? There are only two paths that lie before us. We can either set our minds on things above, or we can set our minds on the things of earth. The things of earth and the things of heaven should be entirely apparent and are laid out in the following verses in this chapter in the form of the things we “put on,” and the things we “put off.” Note well that we are the ones who are putting on or putting off.
We are to put off, or put to death, fornication. Most notably this would be adultery. Uncleanness, which would be all forms of immorality. Inordinate affections or passions which would be lusts. This could be sexual in nature or it could be a lust for money or power or promotion. It is all idolatry because it “unseats,” the Lord Jesus from His rightful place on the throne of your heart. We have also to put off anger and hateful thoughts and of course any kind of blasphemy should never be heard on our lips. Now, we are not left alone in the putting off of these things. The genuine saint has died and we are hidden in Christ. Therefore we love Him with a love that knows no bounds. In the end this will be your greatest weapon, your very love for Jesus and His love for you and the Holy Spirit will magnify this love in your hearts towards Him. It is our greatest weapon because in genuine love, the very last thing we would ever desire to do would be to displease our heavenly Father.
There are many many people in this world who have excellent and righteous early fathers and mothers. Speak to them and they will tell you that the very last thing in this world would they would ever want to do would be to disappoint them. They say they would rather die than to see the look of disappointment on their faces. Now brothers and sisters, is not our relationship with our heavenly Father so much higher than any earthly relationship? The very notion of disappointing our Heavenly Father should form the greater boundary of the narrow path. And therefore we rather put on all the attributes of the new man, the one who arose with Christ. Tender mercies and kindness should be the order of the day. Humility and meekness should pave the narrow road on which we walk. Long-suffering while continuing in kindness and mercy to others should be one of the many ways that we are marked. Love and forgiveness above all else should be as natural to as it is to breathe for we ourselves are lavish recipients of such. Today, brothers and sisters, put on and put off. Take up your cross daily and you shall do both, to the glory of our Lord and Savior Jesus.
Col 2:9 For in him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
And this Scripture goes on to say that ” you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.” The scripture here quoted. comes from a chapter that is warning us about the dangers of religion. There is fullness in Christ alone. Only in Christ alone can we walk this narrow path. Only in Christ alone can we ever live to serve Him. It is He who is above all things and it is in Him that we find our place in the Body. It has nothing to do with “your church.” It is quite apart from the traditions of your fathers and the commandments and doctrines of men which appear to be wise and humble, but which have no affect whatsoever in your ongoing walk and battle that you have been called to.
We have been called into this fullness, into the depths of the Fathers heart wherein lie the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The treasures of a burning heart that is set on fire by the all consuming love of the Lord Jesus Christ which is manifested by the Holy Spirit. We are called to live an abundant life in Christ, which comes from a life rooted and built up in Him where the fruit of our lips is the praise of God and where thanksgiving is the seat of all our affections. We were buried with the Lord Jesus Christ in baptism and we were raised with Him by grace, through faith in the living God. We are now dead to the world and the life we used to live and alive together with Him because He wiped out all our previous debts, having nailed them to the cross. We are, quite simply, debt free. Praise Jesus. Those principalities and powers that laid claim to us through sin, the Lord Jesus Christ triumphed over them. He disarmed them and humiliated them by His very own willing sacrifice.
(Col 1:19-20) For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell; and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, whether things on earth or things in heaven having made peace through the Blood of the Cross.
And it pleased the Father that we should be reconciled to Him by the Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. We who were once enemies of the cross and alienated from God have been reconciled, praise the Living God! We have been presented to the Father, holy and blameless and above reproach by the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. This is where we stand. This is how we stand. This is how the Father sees us. This is indeed, our position and will remains so. Now, I could stop right there and most preachers do. Most teachers do. You will get a thousand amens when you preach this and leave out the word that immediately follows. IF!!!! We all know what the word means. It means “unless,” or “if indeed.” And so we see that Paul tells the sainst’s that this position is conditional.
What are the conditions he states……..1. If indeed you continue in the faith. Meaning? If you continue to trust God and walk with Him. 2. If you continue to be grounded and steadfast. Meaning? Grounded means to consolidate. Consolidate as a verb means to bring together into a single or unified whole and as an adjective it means to solidify, form or coherent. So, to be one in Christ and go in the faith, becoming sons and daughters as opposed to babes in Christ. To continue on to maturity 3. Not moved away from the hope of the Gospel. Meaning? To be heavenly minded, to find joy not only on the mountaintops but also in the depths of the valleys. To be able to rejoice in the midst of your sufferings and trials. To be drawn ever closer to the Lord by your tribulations.
This is pleasing to the Lord. He takes no pleasure in those who draw back. To continue in the faith is oftentimes to endure. To continue in the faith is oftentimes overcoming. To continue in the faith is get down on our knees, with Job, after great loss, and worship the Lord still and cry out “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.” Will you continue in the faith? Have you continued in the faith? Paul says ” Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.” Warning and teaching brothers and sisters, they go hand in glove.And Paul has of course done both in this very chapter. For we are handling riches. The pearl of great price. We direct the souls of men towards the heart of God which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. It is priceless, and we must treat it as such.
Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
In all things Jesus might have the preeminence. In all things brothers and sisters. And for this purpose we read in the earlier verses of this chapter that ” you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” Increasing in the knowledge of God and the knowledge of His will is the work of the Holy Spirit in you. And as this occurs then Jesus is elevated, Jesus is lifted up, Jesus becomes first and last in all things, He indeed becomes your grand obsession and in this God is glorified. It was Christ who delivered us from the powers of darkness. It was God who transferred us, we were translated into the Kingdom of “The Son of His love.” How beautiful is that phrase ” The Son of His Love.” We, by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ become the sons and the daughters of His love!
Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Jesus is the Word made flesh. Jesus in Immanuel. He walks among us and is in us by the power of the Holy Spirit. By Jesus all things were created that are in heaven and in earth. Thrones, dominions and principalities and powers, all things were created by Jesus for the glory of God the Father. He is before all things and by Him all things exist. He is the head of the Body, the Church, and He is the firstborn from the dead and in all these things He has the preeminence. It is the devils task to tear Jesus down in the minds of men in a futile effort to dethrone Him. He detests the fact that Jesus Christ is the Son of His love. He is insanely jealous of Jesus and wants to replace Him which is why he is anti-christ. By removing the preeminence of Jesus from our gatherings he has went a long way in an inevitably futile task. How tragic that Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior has been sidelined and relegated in the hearts of millions of professing saints around the world in their hearts and in their gatherings.
Yet praise the Lord Jesus rules and reigns supreme in the hearts of His very own, no matter how much of the world has flooded into what we call churches. Jesus is and always will be higher than the highest heavens. One day the Lord will rend the heavens and His glory will flow down the mountains and fill every valley with His majesty. The seas will flee at His presence, the mountains will humbly bow and say ” Glory , glory to the risen King.” The sun will turn its face away in shame for it is outshone by the brilliance of His illumination. The moon and the stars will cry out ” Holy, Holy is He who was and is and forever shall be.” And every voice from every tongue will say “Jesus,” and acknowledge the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. And the beasts of the earth will fall down and cover their faces and then the lion will rise up and approach the lamb and they will lay down together.
And every knee shall bow in every tribe and in every nation and even the hordes of hell will fall silent as He approaches. The earth itself will grow silent and shall be still and then a glorious noise will begin to rise and will fill the earth, it will fill the sea it will fill the night skies it will fill the whole universe and all that will be heard will be the choirs of angels, that heavenly choir and the glory of God will not only cover the earth but will fill up everything that there is or has ever been. God’s saints, the children of His love will rise on this glorious symphony, they will arise in the updrafts of His glory and majesty and it will carry them into the heart of God. And those who rejected this magnificent glory will fall and their cries will be heard as they fall into the depths of darkness, for what eyes can ever see light again that were not sanctified eyes. And He will reign forever.
I believe we need to bring the Holy Spirit of God back into the church, back by prayer, obedience, and confession, until He literally takes over. Then there will be life and light and power and victory and joy and fruit in our lives. We can live on a different level altogether, a level never before dreamed possible. Every church has an obligation to regularly examine itself to see if what it is doing is on the solid foundation of the Holy Spirit. The tendency is to drift, as the Scriptures often warn us. I need to be careful that my life is solid on the foundation. If I am not building my life and ministry on the foundation of the Holy Spirit, I will not be pleasing or glorifying to God. (A.W.Tozer)
What a tragic statement from so long ago, that “we need to bring the Holy Spirit of God back into the church.” What is a church without the Holy Spirit? What is a life without the Holy Spirit? Well it probably looks like our own best efforts. And what will our own best efforts amount to? The very best scenario, a counterfeit to the living God. Some counterfeits are much better than others. The deadness in a lot of churches is as apparent as the nose on your face. Some hide the deadness much better. A lot of noise, a lot of shouting, dimmed lights, lifestyle sermons and motivational speaking. Yet, without the Holy Spirit, just as dead as the other churches mentioned. Tozer said “until He literally takes over.” I believe that is a bridge too far for most modern churches. How would the programs fit in? How long would the service be? “Hey, i did not hear my favorite guy speak this morning.” Toes would be stepped on and the tares would howl in protest and walk.
If the tendency is to drift, and it is, assuming there was a good starting point, where does that leave us today? Ask the average pastor how “his church,” is doing and he will tell you wonderful stories. On the whole he will be well pleased. If anything is to change there must be a revival of holy dissatisfaction. There must be desperation. Desperate times demands desperate measures. There must be honest assessments of where we are. And what blueprint shall we use for that? Do you know of another besides the Scriptures? There is none. The old paths is the Scriptures. The old paths is the Holy Spirit. The old paths leads to a place where the Holy Spirit “literally takes over.” Are we so far down the “new,” paths that we cannot even visualize what it would look like to get back to the Word and its description on how we gather and how we edify one another. When was the last time there was a manifestation of the Spirit in your gathering? Our traditions and our programs are all too often the last dying breath of what once was. They act as ventilators that artificially keep us breathing. And just as 90% of people die who go on ventilators in the world, the spiritual ventilators of our programs and traditions are spiritually killing people.
It is time for the Jesus people to stand up. Stand up brothers and sisters and cry out that the Holy Spirit of God would come back into the church, back by prayer, obedience, and confession, until He literally takes over. We were not created and born again to sit lifeless and mute and to drown in mediocrity. We were born again to be extraordinary. To be used by God to feed and to edify one another in the assembly of the saints. To cry out “Holy , Holy, Holy is His name.” What would happen in your assembly if, at the leading of the Spirit, you stood up and cried this out? Florrie Evans stood up in her Calvinistic church and declared publicly that she “loved the Lord Jesus with all of her heart.” And with that, just that simple, bold public declaration that must have horrified the religionists, revival fell. Not a revival of preaching mind you. Not a revival of programs. Not a revival of institutions, but a revival where the “Holy Spirit literally took over.” And down flowed the glory and up went the prayers. Up went the confessions and up went the unashamed declarations of Jesus. The glory fell and the tears fell and the world was changed. We worship the same God today as we did in 1904. What then hinders us? Perhaps we simply don’t want it?
(Php 4:6-7) Be anxious for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
How many times have you read that brothers and sisters? Many years ago, for the better part of many months, the Lord laid this Scripture on my heart. Fear had been such a part of my life since childhood. On the outside it would never seem this way, yet my fears were my secret chains. Fears of death. Fears of life, multiple insecurities about myself and my surroundings. The old Frank drank and did drugs to quiet these noisy perpetually clanging chains. The new Frank who had been born again no longer had the crutches of old to lean upon. And yet, time and time again the words “be anxious nothing,” would rise up to be counted in my soul. This peace of God that surpasses all understanding seemed like some our of reach utopia, yet there it was. Would we be told not to be anxious if it were not possible? My head knew if must be possible if God commanded us not to be anxious, but how to attain such a peace?
After many months of being stuck on this Scripture and bringing it before the Lord, I realized the Lord was showing me that it was sin. To fear was sin. To be anxious was a lack of trust. I realized that I was offending my Lord. It changed everything for me. I didn’t suddenly overnight stop being anxious or walk in a peace that surpassed understanding, but I now had identified the root cause of my problem and so from then on was determined to “work this out,” just as we were told to work out our salvation. It was part of the sanctification process. And a key phrase for me was found in this very same chapter.
“For I have learned, in whatever state, to be content.” (v 11) There was a learning process. If you look back at your lives brothers and sisters, how many times has the Lord been with you and kept you? Hundreds? Thousands? Multiple thousands? Yes, and every-time He has taken us through. All through those times we are learning. Learning what? About His faithfulness. And as we understand and recognize His continual faithfulness, even when so many times we ourselves were not trusting, then we grow in our own faith because of witnessing His. And this produces thanksgiving in our hearts. This thankful heart is a sweet aroma to God and a powerful salve to our many trials.
And the way forward is to take our thoughts captive. This is our work but the tools have been given to us by the Lord. Whatever we focus our minds on, we magnify. Sin is magnified as we continually gaze upon it. Fear is also magnified as we feed it with our thoughts. And so we have been instructed to meditate on these things……..what is true, what is noble, what is just, what is pure, what is lovely. Concentrate on good reports and what is virtuous. Consider all things that are worthy of praise and meditate on them. In this way we are focusing the mind on the goodness of God and rejoicing in that. No matter if we are full or hungry, rich or poor, sick or in health, we rejoice in God whether hungry, poor or sick. And in that rejoicing and coming into His presence, anxiousness flees away like the vacuous shadow that it is.
Php 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
What things were previously gain to Paul? Paul had just laid out his religious qualifications. He was a Pharisee of the Pharisees. No one among the group he was describing, the Christian ministers from Jerusalem, was more qualified than he was. And yet these qualifications merely led to “the righteousness of the law.” These men who boasted of their qualifications in order to elevate themselves had their mind set on the things of the world. They desired to be elevated in the eyes of men. They boasted. Yet, Paul says that their God was their belly and their glory was actually their shame.
Brothers and sisters, we are either heavenly minded or earthly minded. You cannot be both, its a mind set. Its the seat of your affections. It will determine the words that come out of your mouth and the way that you live your life before the world. Paul is having the same problem in this chapter as he had in 1 Cor 12. There he spoke of the dangers of talking about your spiritual revelations, calling himself a fool, but having been once again compelled to put a certain group of people in their place and call them out. Both in 1 Cor 12 and in this chapter he boasts about first, his infirmities and secondly his losses. For in speaking in this manner, he is humbled and Christ is elevated.
And so what is the key teaching of this chapter three? It is the dichotomy between having a “righteousness,” that comes from the law, and having a righteousness “which is from God by faith.” The first puffs you up. It seeks to elevate you. It causes you to become “enemies of the cross of Christ.” It shall destroy you. It shall cause you to worship worldly things. Your god shall be “your belly, meaning your lifestyle, gains made by merchandising the things of God, thus enriching yourself. You will seek and often attain fame and that fame, in the spiritual realm, is your very shame. The second righteousness , that which is from God by faith enables you “to know Him and the power of His resurrection.”
To know Him intimately it to gain the everlasting life, resurrection life! To have this kind of righteousness causes you to walk in resurrection power, the power of the risen Christ. This righteousness grants you the right, yes that’s right, the right and the privilege to enter into the fellowship of His sufferings. In this way we are conformed to His death, even the death of the cross and to His life, yes even the life of His resurrection. All of this leads to eternal life. Might I suggest you refrain from boasting in anything other than the cross of Christ and your infirmities and loss, that the power of Christ may rest upon you. What kind of righteousness do you have?
(Php 2:20-21) For I have no man likeminded, who will sincerely care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.
This is such a powerful and bold statement! Imagine this brothers and sisters, as early as Paul’s day there was no one like-minded, who would sincerely care for the flock, apart from a few, like Timothy and Epaphroditus, whom we are told almost died for the cause of Christ. Most, and we are talking about Christian ministers here, looked out for themselves and cared rather for the things of this world and not the things of Christ. Was Paul too harsh? How would that kind of statement be met today? Can you not hear the howls of protest even now if one were to level the same criticism against that majority of today’s ministers. In the end it was all about mindset. We are told at the beginning of chapter two that we were to have the mind of Christ. To be sacrificial. Paul said that he was being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of their faith and was glad in it and rejoiced.
As ministers of the gospel we are called to have a certain state of mind. The seat of all our affections must be found in Christ. We are called to have a shepherd’s heart, willing to lay down our lives for the sheep. This was Paul, this was Timothy, this was Epaphroditus. How about you? How about me? Paul warned us, in very strong language to beware of those who only live to serve themselves. They call themselves ministers yet Paul called them dogs. He called them evil workers, those who continued to preach the law and elevate themselves. Their God is their belly and the glory they believe themselves to have is in fact their shame. Paul did not measure himself by his earthly status, nor his place in the traditions of men. In fact it was quite the opposite. His standing was measured by what he had lost to this world. His only desire was to gain Christ and be found in Him. Let this be our mindset brothers and sisters. Let us desire to gain Christ and be found in Him. And if we are to be poured out as a drink offering, then let us rejoice in the Lord, and again I say rejoice.
Years ago I saw a documentary of a certain part of Africa. For 10 long months it sees no rain. First the mighty river dries up and then it becomes pools.Then the pools slowly shrink until they are nothing more than wet mud-holes. In this particular documentary, it showed a giant crocodile that had taken up residence right in the middle of a mud-hole. Despite its presence, deer and other animals risked their very lives in order to partake in the last of the water. A small number of animals, rather than taking up residence with the crocodile,undertook a long migration in search of water. Yet almost all the animals that were indigenous to this geographic location, refused to go in search of water and died before the rains came. Animals that in normal circumstances would never come within 100 yards of a crocodile, came right up beside him in a desperate attempt to get some satisfaction, from this drying mud-hole.
When God withdraws the rain of His presence from the church we see many strange things. The majority stay where they are and slowly die as they throw their lot in with their former predators.Others, like the deer that panteth for the water-brooks, are driven to make journeys they would otherwise never make. Driven out into the deserts and dry places in their desperate desire to find living waters. The tragedy for many in the “church” today is that they can live a life, devoid of His presence, and not even know that they are dying. Imagine that this ten months without rain is a season or seasons in Christendom. Generation after generation sucking on mud, barely surviving on the moisture that remains in the mud hole. Getting down and dirty in the mud, and being dangerously close to the world as they try to survive in the dry season. To try and operate in this world as a church without the Holy Spirit and the presence of the living God is to be reliant upon a mud-hole. Vestige of some by- gone days where once the river flowed. Talk of past victories but no present life. Living on memories and manna from a bygone age.
As someone who now lives in Kansas, a place that only gets about 33 inches of rain a year, I know how dry the ground can become and how deep that dryness is. At first when it rains the rain merely flows over the top surface. The ground is so hard it does not penetrate. It needs to consistently rain over several days for the ground to become saturated,to be thoroughly penetrated. Flash floods come and go very quickly and when it is gone, it is like it has never rained because it never penetrated. Yet, when it rains consistently over time, the effects are deep and lasting.There is a deep penetrating rain coming for Gods people. He has taken His people into the wilderness, the valley of death, the valley of decision. Because of the intensity of the battle that lies just ahead of us, it was and is necessary for the Lord to take His people into the desert place of testing. They have left the mud-holes of the world and the crocodiles behind. They refused to stay and die in a place of compromise. They have been driven into the desert and there they will find the Church, in a place where it seems impossible for anything to live, never mind thrive. Survival here does not depend upon traditions or past victories or the dusty heritage of religion. No, rather it depends upon the hand of God alone., A place where we once again cry out to the Living God for Him and Him only. Those who truly desire Him will stay in this place of testing. The Remnant of Gods people will prevail for our God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Yes there is an intensity of persecution for Gods people just appearing on the horizon. There are storm clouds gathering even as you read this. There is coming a time such as has never been seen before for Gods people. Yet with huge storm clouds come great rain falls. God will pour out His Spirit in a such a way that His children will stand in the pouring saturating rain of His presence. And despite the intense persecution and all out war that the old serpent will wage on us, we will rejoice and glorify and lift our hands on high. We will praise God for the rain that falls. The persecution will seem light in comparison to the eternal weight of glory that is to be experienced in His presence. God will inhabit the praises of His people who worship Him with their whole hearts. Gods people will only care that His presence is with them. As long as He goes before them, they will follow. They will follow Him right into the valley of the shadow of death. For they know that He will lead them to the pure waters of life.They will allow nothing to separate them from their God. Stay the course brothers and sisters, the rain is coming, and then comes the King.
Php 2:12b … work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Oh the trouble this little portion of Scripture has caused! The word “work,” tends to have caused the most trouble. Of course its not the word work but rather the phrase “work out.” Which simply means to finish. When you were born again by the grace of God through faith, and not of works, lest any man should boast, a work was begun in you. Begun mind you. Something had been initiated, and that something was new life. God gave you something that He had promised, just like when God gave the promised land to the Israelites. And just as they had to possess the land then you too must possess that which was given to you. There remains the battle between the flesh and the spirit, actually its a war.
Will you fight the good fight? Will you resist the devil? Will you humble yourself? Will you forgive? Will you love your enemies? Will you draw near to God? Will you turn the other cheek? Will you refuse to seek revenge? Obedience versus disobedience. That is your work and God will not do it for you. No one can do it for you. And for those who have encountered God, you know that the greatest love story ever told was unleashed into your very being. Imagine disappointing the one who is your grand obsession? Are you not fearful of that? Does that not make you tremble? Fear and trembling not because of any dread or any fear of hell or what will happen to you, bur rather a very real fear that you would disappoint the lover of your soul. It is our lives work to be “imitators of God as dear children.” And we strive towards that place by obedience and yielding. No genuine saint willy nilly disobeys his or her Lord. Therein lies our “working out.” The lazy disobedient scoundrel who says that God has done it all and there is no part for us to play will sink down into the morass of dead orthodoxy and be left with nothing more than a mental assent to an abstract truth.
Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
What mind is Paul talking about brothers and sisters? We know that the mind of Christ knew that He was equal with God. Yet, He made Himself of no reputation, rather He took on the form of a bond-servant and came to earth as a man of flesh and Blood. And walking the earth in such a manner, He was humbling Himself and being obedient to God. He was born to die and not only to die, but to suffer the death of the cross. We too shall live and we shall die but who shall willingly take up the cross and die upon that? This is the mindset we have been called to. You dear brother, you dear sister have been born to die, yet yours shall be the death of the cross. Daily you shall pick it up and yield to it. And upon it you shall watch your flesh die. You shall see the death of selfish ambition. You shall see the death of pride. You shall begin to see others as more important than you. Their interests shall be more important to you than your own. You shall find like minded believers and will be joined to them in heart and mind and soul. You, brothers and sisters of the cross shall be of one accord and in this mindset you shall find unity.
Php 1:29 For unto you it has been granted on behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;
This is a challenge to most saints. Yet it is the mind of God and the Spirit. How often, when we hear the word “granted,” do we associate it with suffering? People are granted wishes. Others are granted pardons. Requests are granted. And so here we read that it has been granted to us, we have been given the unique privilege of, suffering for Jesus. When you suffer or have suffered in the past, did you consider it an honor? Did you think to yourself “oh how marvelous, I get to suffer for Jesus sake and in doing so glorify His name?” I think if we are honest with ourselves, very few people in our day think like this, yet here it is written. Paul, writing from his chains of arrest, refers to them as “my chains are in Christ.” And because of his prevailing attitude in the midst of suffering his chains actually act to encourage other saints and embolden them. This is our calling brothers and sisters. Nothing has changed since the days of the disciples, who, after being scourged, celebrated the fact that they were counted worthy to suffer for the cause of Christ.
In the Kingdom of God, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Whether we live or whether we die we have been called to glorify God. To magnify Christ in the eyes of the world, by the power of the Holy Spirit, is our calling. Not just Paul or Peter but you and I. We have the very same calling and we are led and empowered by the very same Holy Spirit. We know that the work that He has begun in us He is finishing in us to the very day we are called home. We are a work in progress, ever striving to be like our Lord. We above all people should have a great desire to go home to be with Jesus, and this, tempered only by our desire to serve Him here for His will and for His good pleasure. Therefore, we saints, whether in chains or whether in ill health or whether in poverty, should always have the same mindset. That we should stand in one Spirit, with one mind and one heart and soul striving together for the faith of the Gospel. And if we find ourselves in chains or impoverished or in sickness unto death, we should stand strong and in no way be terrified, for this is proof to the enemy of our soul that our words carry little value. Let us stand and be a witness to God’s glory in whatever situation we find ourselves in and whether we live or whether we die.
Many evangelical churches and most pentecostal or charismatic churches you go into today, raise their hands in worship. Like everything else in Christendom, there can be the mechanical act of doing something because it is supposed to be done, or there can be the true living dynamic response to the very presence of the Living God. Every single aspect of the natural worship of Christianity can be reduced to some dusty empty ritual that has long since replaced the living reality of God’s manifest presence. It is interesting when you watch secular concerts that you see arms aloft all over the stadium or concert hall, swaying to the rhythm of the song. Good music entertains us and can move us, Gods manifest presence invades every part of who we are and never leaves us the same. It creates in us a thirst that can never be quenched by anything other than His presence. It tears down and builds up, it raises us up from the dark valley floor to the lofty heights of His glory.
There is the presence of God to be found in glorious, enthusiastic and energetic worship, the kind of worship that lifts your spirit. It can lift up the head and invigorate the heart and fill you full of joy and you leave strengthened. This is good worship. Yet there is another kind of presence of God in worship, the kind of presence that there seems to be such a famine of throughout the land. The first kind of presence we spoke of lifts your heart, the second kind of presence invades every part of who you are. It falls from heaven like a heavy dew, heads are lowered and hands are raised. All becomes quiet, one barely breathes as the Spirit of God slowly penetrates our very being and the ground upon which we stand becomes Holy ground. It saturates our very DNA.
The first kind of presence uplifts us, the second changes us fundamentally. As living waters pour into us then it rises up like a great river that is so full that it overflows its banks. The banks themselves begin to crumble and fall into this river of pure life as it swells up and floods every part of who we are. The landscape is being changed by this flood, the very topography of our lives is being altered by its powers and everything that is not securely rooted to Godly foundations are simply swept away. Changed forever. And when the flood recedes we are left with a glorious afterglow. As the deer pants for the water-brooks, I wonder, do our hearts pant after this kind of encounter.
The Lord Himself does not need professional worship teams. He does not need people to encourage us to stand up, jump up and down and raise our hands. In the Welsh revival two young women singing either acapella or simply backed by a piano typically sang “Here is love, vast as the ocean.” And there was love, in the very midst of them, vast as the ocean, flooding the hearts and minds of all who attended. Brothers and sisters, in all our modernity, what have we lost? In the program of churches and the professional class of worshiper leaders and pastors we have lost the simplicity of it all. And in the losing of it we now have to entertain the people. Spirit led worship is exactly that, it is Spirit led.
In work we have a routine. In life we have a routine. Prisoners in prison have a routine. Oftentimes we are slaves to the routine, it is what gets us through life. Yet, there is nothing routine about the Holy Spirit of the Living God. He is dynamic and you can never know what way the wind will blow next. Have we sold our souls for a routine? Routine in the home, routine at work, routine at church. Routine people do not change the world. Routine people do not do wage war on the battle-fields of life. The Spirit of God is dynamic and those filled with His “dynamis,” change the environment around them because the environment inside them has been filled to capacity and is overflowing its banks. Lord fill us again to overflowing with the kind of presence that invades every part of who we are.
Eph 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
In Paul’s final words to the Ephesians, he addresses all the different groups that he had spoken life into. He had instructed them in ways that they could only carry out by the power of the Holy Spirit. Whether that was Husbands to wives, wives to husbands, children to parents and parents to children, bond-servants to masters and masters to bond-servants, if they were to walk in Christ and be obedient to Him they must walk in the Spirit. This was not just good “how to,’ advice from a life coach or a marriage counsellor, this was instructions from God that could only be carried out by His spiritual children. Now the question was “will you walk in obedience to these instructions?” Will you “put off,” and “put on,” the things aforementioned? If you are willing to do these things then finally brothers and sisters, you must be strong in the Lord and the power of His might. Your obedience to God qualifies you to put on the whole armor of God. Do not be fooled, no disobedient servant shall put on this armor.
For this is a spiritual battle of unseen forces and this is where the victory will lie. As the days of this world wind down then the principalities and powers will rise up. The rulers of the darkness of this age and the spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places shall come forward will great rage and boldness. They will attack truth from every imaginable angle and to the saints it will seem that we are being swamped and over run by the forces of darkness. It is, in effect, a last stand. Therefore saints, take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand in the coming evil day and having done all-to stand. Truth will be your core, it shall be fastened to you at the very center of who you are. The righteousness of Christ shall be your breastplate. It shall guard your heart against the darkness of unrighteousness. Your feet shall be secure as it stands upon the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ of which we are not ashamed. Our trust in God shall protect us from the lies of Satan and his hordes, his threats shall not penetrate our hearts. And with our minds protected by our salvation and a sword in our hands then we shall hold our ground. We shall not move. We shall be an army of warriors who march upon our knees in prayer and supplication to the glory of God.
This stand, by the power of the Holy Spirit will fill us with boldness. We shall be bolder than we ever imagined. We shall be ambassadors for Christ even as we are shackled by the fleshly chains of men. Chained, perhaps, in this world, but free Sons and daughters of the world to come. This stand will of course, enrage the enemies of our souls. Think of the three Hebrew children. They may perish in the fire kindled by the hatred of men, but they would never bow down to the gods of this world. As we make out stand, as we refuse to bow down to the gods of this world, then we must expect the fire to come. Yet look again into the depths of the flames that surrounded the Hebrew children …….look…. can you see? The Son of man and the fellowship of the flames. We who worship Christ shall not burn, but rather we shall live forever in the glorious presence of our Lord and God. So brothers and sisters, lay down and put off that which hinders you from this fight and take up your cross. Put on the righteousness of Christ and the full armor of God and let us stand together. Back to back, side to side, lets us surround ourselves with our fellow saints and the Holy Spirit and let the battle of the ages begin, for Christ has already won the war!
Eph 5:1-2 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children and walk in love.
How astonishing that we have been called to imitate God and walk in love as Christ also loved us. We are to love as we are loved. God never calls His children to do what they cannot. He has empowered us, enabled us and equipped us to imitate Him in being a sweet sacrifice to God, a sweet smelling aroma. The Love of Jesus was measured by His sacrifice. Calvary is the measure of Gods love. If God called His Son to sacrifice for us, then He is calling His children to imitate Jesus. Not that we are saviors of the world but rather we represent and manifest the living Christ in us to a dark and broken world. When you measure yourself, you must measure yourself against the Lord. Not your pastor or your dear Godly grand father, no, you must measure yourself and your faith against that which is perfect. It is a high calling no doubt. He is our High calling. He is our North star, and just because popular culture would say “what would Jesus do,’ does not make that wrong. Only remember this, we do not have to wonder what Jesus would do, for Jesus dwells within us by the power of the Holy Spirit and has given us His word to lead us and guide us.
And so we are called to walk in love with the same love that Christ loves us with. Walking in love empowered with the truth causes us to walk in light, the very light that shatters the darkness. We know that darkness very well, for we once walked in it. The fruit of the Spirit in us is grounded in goodness and righteousness and truth. These are our weapons, this is the armor we are called to put on. No longer can we walk according to the unfruitful works of darkness, they must have no place in us. We are to put away the former things and rather, put on the fruitful works of the new man. He has filled us with the treasures of heaven in these earthen vessels. He has commanded light to shine out of what was formerly darkness. And the very first place we see the fruits of this light is in our relationships with our wives and husbands. Wives shall submit to their own husbands as unto the Lord and husbands shall love their wives as Jesus loved the Church. Both of these positions are almost always an anathema to the flesh. Whether it is submitting to or loving someone to the point o sacrifice and death, only in Christ and by the power of the Spirit can these attitudes be “put on.” And by the same power the old attitudes must be put away. In all things saints, imitate God and walk in the love of Christ and all its many manifestations.
