I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!

Php 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.

There are many Scriptures that are quoted frequently in Christendom in a context that makes you cringe. This is one of the worst offenders for me. You hear this Scripture all the time. If little Johnny is trying out for a part in a play, he may be quoted this verse. If someone is looking at a promotion they may be quoted this verse. And yet, what is the context of this verse? In the previous verses Paul tells us that he has learned to be content in whatever situation he found himself in. Whether he had a full stomach or was very hungry, he was content. He knew how to live if all his needs were met and he also knew how to live if he suffered need. Do you see what he is doing here, he is taking your current set of circumstances out of it all together. When he says he can do all things, he is talking about the bad things. It takes no supernatural strength to be content when you have much ( although in some cases it might) It takes no supernatural strength to be content when there is food on the table, when there is money in the bank, when there is a roof over your head, when there are clothes on your back, when you are free to move around wherever you desire.

No, the supernatural aspect of contentment comes to play when we are hungry, when we are in desperate need, when we are in chains, when we are lost at sea when we are persecuted for the cause of Christ. Now when you’re in these or a million and one other dire situations and you can say ” I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me,” then it rises up to heaven’s throne itself and becomes an anthem of praise and Glory to the living God. It tears away at the walls and the gates of the enemies kingdom. It shines light into deep darkness. You become a living epistle read of men.

When the Romans killed so many of our brothers and sisters in the arena and in a thousand different horrible ways, time and time again they were amazed at the peace which surpasses all understanding that was upon their ” victims.” It astonished many of them to such a degree that they found Jesus right there and then and took their places with the Martyrs. Can you hear their cry of victory now as they overcame in the Spirit every evil act that was designed to tear down their testimony ” I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” This, brothers and sisters is a declaration of victory over circumstances. This is a mountaintop cry heard in the deepest and darkest valleys. Light that penetrates into deep darkness. Joy that overcomes despair, strength that replaces weakness but most of all peace that surpasses all fear and all understanding. What a tremendous testimony to the power and the glory and the ever present help of the living God who has overcome. Let us be found worthy enough to utter such a cry and to God be the glory!!!!!!!
