Life and death in the valley

Posted by appolus on November 23, 2017

Trials and tribulations will ultimately bring out the best in genuine Christians and the worse in the religious man. The harder the circumstances get for the genuine Christian, the more he is forced to his knees and driven deeper into the heart of the Father. He is humbled and contrite as he understands how weak he is and how much flesh he still has.

Ultimately the results of this is more love, more peace, more forgiveness and more understanding. The harder the circumstances become for the religious man, the more bitter he becomes. He has no joy or peace. He will not forgive his enemies and his hatred for those he perceives to have caused his sufferings increases dramatically. So, the trial, the deep valley, is death to one and life to another. The flesh dies and the spirit arises.

Flood conditions.

Posted by appolus on November 22, 2017

As I was walking recently, the Holy Spirit spoke some words to me. ” There is nothing more important than the condition of your heart.” It lingered with me for weeks as I pondered those few words. All of my Christian life I have periods where I retreat into myself and kinda shut down, withdraw from the maddening crowd and simply go along on auto pilot.

In Kansas we can go months without rain. The ground gets baked hard in the sweltering heat of summer. If a rain comes it typically does not penetrate the hard ground, instead there is a flash flood. The ground is wet for a very short period of time and then it is as hard as it ever was.

There are periods when it rains every day in the spring. The ground soaks up the rain and then it rains again and again until it is saturated. When the ground is saturated it takes only a slight rain to cause flooding. The creeks and the rivers are swollen and the landscape is in danger of being changed by raging waters.

If my heart is good, if the waters that flow from heaven flow through me, if my heart remains supple and soaked with the dew that falls from heaven, then it takes very little for the glories of heaven to flood forth from me, living waters that refreshes my soul and others. If my heart is hard, it takes a lot of water just to soften me up. Oh that I would learn to remain close to the source of life itself that I might be useful in season and out of season, that I would be a source of life to others.

The furrows on my brow

Posted by appolus on November 21, 2017

Can you see the furrows on my brow
Each tells a hundred stories of the whys and of the how
I have walked through howling winds I have walked through pouring rain
I have journeyed through the joys and I have journeyed through the pain

Every single furrow marks the valleys I have trod
And the narrow winding road that leads me back to God
And every single line that is marked upon my face
Highlights the very fact that I have lived by grace

Each and every soldier bears the scars of many fights
For every cloudless day there are just as many nights
But even through the furrows and all my many lines
You will see my joy, you’ll see my love and many other signs

For though I bear the scars that are etched upon my back
In the depths of my very soul there has never been a lack
There’s a deep wellspring of peace that continually flows
Despite the many rains and the mighty wind that blows

There is a greater wind from God that carries me along
There is a latter rain from heaven that makes me very strong
The hand of God Himself is the hand that holds the plow
You will know I’ve been to war by the furrows on my brow.

Holiness comes from freedom.

Posted by appolus on November 2, 2017

The freedom to do what is right, towers above the prison and the chains of commandments. One is initiated by love, the other is enforced by the whip. Holiness comes from freedom and freedom comes from love . And this love inspires and draws us and compels us to honor and respect and obey our Father in heaven because His love is the very air that we breathe and the air before the throne is rarified air and if we cannot breathe this air then we die.

Will you die to live?

Posted by appolus on October 18, 2017

The cross is a place of death to the flesh, so very painful on one hand, yet the price of entrance into His presence. If I am to know the soaring mysteries of His presence and the fullness of His joy, then I must come to the place of sacrifice and death. The deeper the work of the cross in my life, the greater the revelation of Jesus. Those who are forgiven much love much and those who come to the cross and dare to dwell there as long as it takes will arise and live an abundant life. May the Lord grant us the grace to continually come to that place of entrance into His presence.

It is in His presence that we learn to yield and to surrender to His will which ultimately defeats the flesh. And while there can be much emotion in true and genuine worship, there is no hype involved. Entering into Christ’s presence one has to first past the brazen alter, this is where we sacrifice. This ensures that all “self-fulfilling” worshipers can never enter in. Will you sacrifice to enter in to the holy of holies? Will you come and dwell at the foot of the cross and die today so that you may arise from that place and live the victorious Christian life in the manifest presence of the Living God?

Are we servants of the Spirit or prisoners of the Organization

Posted by appolus on October 11, 2017

There is a key aspect of life in Christ, it is the power of the Holy Spirit. Most would acknowledge this but many will not truly know what indeed they are acknowledging. What does it mean to be led of the Spirit as opposed to being prisoners of the organization? Let me give you a Biblical example of what it means to me.

Eze 47:9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes.…….. Eze 47:11  But the miry places thereof and the marshes thereof shall not be healed; they shall be given to salt.

What we see here in the prophet’s vision is the power of the Holy Spirit going forth, flowing out, always moving, always fresh always healing. In comparison we see what happens in the miry places, in the marshes where the water does not flow. It becomes stagnant and in those places there is no healing and it slowly turns to salt and all life eventually dies. This is such a stark difference. On the one hand we have on either side of the flowing river, evergreen trees, like the trees from Psa 1:3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. On the other hand we have stagnant pools that go nowhere and are slowly dying or dead. There is no life in the miry places, there is no life in the marshes. This, to me, represents the Christian organizations of the world, the denominations.

In all things and at all times the Holy Spirit must be preeminent. If He is not then your church or your organization is dying. Now a dying man can look very healthy is that not right? It all depends upon where he is in the dying process. Initially there may be no outward signs at all ,yet over time he begins to succumb to death. In regard to organizations this process may take days, months , years or even century’s. An unknown author write the following which I subscribe to…………….

“There are many classifications into which men and women may be divided-upper, middle or lower class; rich, well to do and poor; religious, sceptical and atheist;… and so forth and so on. But as I think, the only categorization which really matters is that which divides men as between Servants of the Spirit and Prisoners of the Organization. That classification which cuts right across all other classifications, is indeed a fundamental one. The idea, the inspiration, originates in the internal world, the world of the Spirit… the idea having embodied itself in the organization, the organization then proceeds gradually to slay the idea which gave it birth. In the field of religion a prophet, an inspired man will see a vision of truth. He expresses that vision as best he may in words. Upon what his disciples understand of the prophets message an organization, a church is built. The half understood message in crystalized into a creed. Before long the principal concern of the church will be to sustain itself as an organization.”

You see, the moment the vision is shared and the people stop along the way and construct a structure or an organization in honor of the vision rather than simply moving forward on the current of the vision to the next vision, death begins its process in the marshes and the miry static places that many of us now call houses of worship. The preeminency of the Holy Spirit, of Jesus in our midst, is quite simply the current that keeps us moving and brings life to everything that it touches. The vision of a man or organization that usurps the preeminent Christ whether willingly or unwittingly is already in the process of dying. As the life of the Spirit wanes in the gathering then it must be gradually replaced by the passion of a man or a group. Rather than entering into His presence people begin to be entertained. They become spectators and not participators and begin to slowly. All over the land the gathering places are in the process of death, various stages perhaps, but death none the less. Outside of being a servant to the Holy Spirit and the preeminency of Jesus there is only death, no matter how skillfully it is covered up and masked, it is death by any other name. We shall be servants of the Holy Spirit or we shall be prisoners of the organization but we cannot be both…………bro Frank

The paradox of the Christian life

Posted by appolus on October 4, 2017

Consider the spiritual life of the Christian. Unless you are engaged in one paradox after another you must reconsider your walk with God. Religion is the opiate of those who in their own minds have arrived yet true Christianity is in a constant state of flux. And by state of flux I do not mean what that phrase typically means in the negative which is uncertainty. In the Lord we are sure but we always beware when we stand lest we fall. This is not a state of anxiety but rather one of diligence. We know from the Scriptures that the Lord is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him which leads us to our first paradox. Seeking that which we have found. In John 15 Jesus says that “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me.” This word abide is a continuous action verb meaning to continue to abide. In other words it is not a one time thing it is a state of being.
I want you to consider the following paradoxes and see how they apply to your life.

1. We are dead but always dying.
2. We have entered but are always entering.
3. We have found but are always seeking.
4. We have encountered but are always seeking to encounter.
5. Our old man died but we are always putting him to death.
6. We were saved but are always working out our salvation.
7. We have arrived but we journey on towards our destination.
8. We are with Him but we journey on towards Him.
9. We are full but we are hungry.
10.We are clothed in white garments but are naked.
11.The Kingdom has come but the Kingdom is coming.
12.We are victorious but we surrender.

These are just a few examples of the paradoxical life in Christ. If you are genuinely saved then all of these paradoxes brings life itself. It is constantly moving and is alive with abundant life and draws you ever closer. If you are merely religious and have had no actual encounter with the living God and try to live the paradoxical life in Christ it will lead you to dissatisfaction and anxiety and away from God. Consider this, for the children of Israel the passage through the red sea was liberation and a way of escape. For the Egyptians it was death.

There can be no middle ground

Posted by appolus on October 4, 2017

In the end, everything of this world is just that, of this world. Only the authentic will do whether that is freedom or justice or beauty or peace. Of course God is these things and only in Him can we have these things, all else is counterfeit, some better than others, but in the end mere copies of the original. The Mona Lisa is a tremendous copy of the woman who sat for the painting. The most incredible landscape painting is still only a painting, the real star is the landscape itself. And so peace in the world, even the greatest peace will only ever be fleeting because it is not the original. Justice in the world is tainted by our very humanity and therefore by necessity falls woefully short of the original, no matter how good it looks or begins. Everything about humanity, outside of God, is counterfeit and dying. It is only the eternal that is pure, whether that is good or evil. We must commit ourselves to the eternal and find true meaning there. In the end, there can only be that which is good or that which is evil. Everything else is an allusion, a counterfeit and fleeting.

The battle for freedom in a divisive world

Posted by appolus on September 27, 2017

Whether it is NFL protests, or racism or police brutality, we hear a lot spoken about freedom in our age. Every day we here that we are free to protest, we are free to resist, free to fight back free to express whatever that is on our mind. The following article is solely for Christians whether black or white. It is not for the secular mind which could not possibly even begin to understand what true freedom in Christ means.

As a man born in Scotland, there is a mythological notion about what it means to fight for freedom. It is wrapped up in the psyche of the people and Scotland, in many ways, has become synonymous with freedom, thanks mostly to Hollywood and history. Indeed the declaration of Arbroath was the forerunner, by centuries, to the declaration of Independence. This notion of rising up and throwing off our oppressors is a very glamorous notion. Rebellion and rejection of authority is fundamental to the very essence of what it means to be American and really what it means to be human thanks to the garden of Eden. Shortly after coming to Jesus I had a vision. It was a powerful vision that took my breath away and changed forever my notions of freedom. Here it is……………

I felt the rush of air rising beneath me, lifting me in the updrafts of His presence up and through the clouds. Suddenly a mountain top appeared, rising majestically through  a sea of gray. The mountain trembled and the thunder clapped and I heard Jesus say, ” go.” I flapped my arms effortlessly and soon the mountain was far behind as I flew over rivers and valley’s and great forests of pine. Then I came across a great assembly of men gathered together on a bleak and desolate Scottish moor as the rain began to fall and the wind howled in anguished anticipation. Words of freedom echoed up to the sky above from the ground below. And Jesus said to me “will a man die for freedom? How many men have spilled their blood and hastened their souls to eternal damnation for that which is not even a shadow. These men fought and died not knowing that it is not in the winning or the losing, neither can that which they seek be attained by knife or sword.” I flapped my arms once more and suddenly the mists of time rolled back, back, unto the dawning of a different age. Below me, another assembly of men, angry men. These men were not fighting for freedom, they were seeking to destroy it. They shouted,”crucify Him, crucify Him,” and freedom hung in the balance. And all of hell’s fury cheered as the sky grew dark and the lightning flashed and the earth stood still in utter dismay. Would the sun ever rise in the sky again, or had darkness won the day? Then after three days and three nights, from a sea of darkness and gloom, rose majestically, a pure white standard that shattered the darkness forever. Now the white flag signifies surrender, when we surrender our life’s to Jesus, we gain victory from the jaws of defeat and the darkness is destroyed forever.

Jesus shattered my notions of freedom by this vision and word. What a tragedy that men and nations could fight for political freedom, could throw off the shackles of slavery and then die knowing nothing of true freedom. This freedom was given to us, not by men, for what is given by men can be taken by men, no, this freedom that was given to us by God Himself on the bloody battle-field of Calvary of which no man nor power that exists can take from us. Would it not be better to live as a slave in this world but be a free man in the world that was and is and is to come? What a tragedy to throw off the shackles of human slavery and yet die a slave to sin and eternal damnation. Temporal political freedom means nothing in the Kingdom of God. The only freedom that truly matters is the freedom that we have in Christ.

I am wearied of any identity that exists outside of our identity in Christ. Identifying and highlighting our so-called differences runs counter to the Scriptures. If we are in Christ then we are one. Christians should not allow the secular world to divide that which the Lord has united. It is the work of Satan himself in the guise of clever and devious politicians to divide and conquer. I see no black man, I see no white man, I see no brown man, I see no yellow man.I see Christ in my brothers and sisters and in that there is true freedom. Freedom from hatred, freedom from bitterness, freedom from anger, freedom from the desire for revenge. The Body of Christ should be the shining city on the hill. Do you hate or dislike another man because he is white? Do you hate or dislike another man because he is black? Then you are a slave and you know nothing of the freedom of which I speak. You will gravitate towards secular men and away from Jesus as the sting of slavery begins to bite deeper and deeper. Would you be free today? Lay down your rights. Would you be free today? Lay down your long-held grievances for you cannot serve two masters. The true master told an enslaved people that when their earthly masters compelled them to walk one mile, they were to walk two miles. Anything outside of this is to worship Barabbas and reject Jesus. The spirits of the age, like the sirens of old, are luring your ship onto the rocks. The lighthouse that shines in the darkness warns us to flee from such spirits and to put Satan behind us.

I run the race

Posted by appolus on September 26, 2017

One hundred evil hands reach up
They try to pull me down
One thousand hands reach from the sky
And lift my weary soul on high

There is a heavenly host above
A glorious cloud that covers with love
That sees your struggles and your fight
As the darkness comes against the light

But I will rise and not stay down
I will get up and claim my crown
And whether I am rich or poor
In Christ alone I will endure

I may be naked but clothed in light
I may be distressed but still ready to fight
I may be cast down but not defeated
For I lift my eyes to where Christ is seated

For in this vessel dwells heavenly treasure
Tis Christ alone who is my measure
For light is my affliction and Christ my story
I run the race for eternal glory

William Gurnall- The Christian in Complete Armour

Posted by appolus on September 25, 2017

My dear sister Fiona asked if she could post this piece and direct folks to her website. I am happy to post this. God bless you sister………………bro Frank

Frank is kindly allowing me to share with you a blog the Lord has had me doing for the past few months. The blog is based upon William Gurnall’s book, “The Christian in Complete Armour”.

The Lord led me to Mr. Gurnall’s book, and laid it on my heart to do a blog that follows the teachings found in Mr. Gurnall’s book. You can find the first chapter of my blog here:

http://gleaningsfromgurnall.blogspot.com/…/06/chapter-one.h….

I strongly recommend that you read the chapters in order as they do build upon one another.

For background on the book itself, please go to my other blog: http://growingasadiscipleofchrist-fionab.blogspot.com/…/a-m….

Thank you, Frank, for allowing me to share this with others. I truly believe that serious-minded believers need to learn how to correctly utilize their armor so that they are able to defend themselves when necessary, and properly engage the enemy when asked to do so by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Oh to stand under an open heaven!

Posted by appolus on September 12, 2017

There is so much noise in the average persons life, noise and activity and business. Yet, at the beating heart of who we are, is Jesus, the lover of our souls. I dearly wish that a great hush would fall over the church. That all the noise would simply be replaced by a holy quietness. The musicians would put down their instruments, the talkers would stop talking and there we would remain until the Lord came upon us. The cry of our hearts should be audible in the congregation. The longing seeking heart should replace the noisy professionals. Just one cry, crying out the name of Jesus with all the longing of a desperate heart would surely bring heaven down to earth. Rain would fall on a dry and dusty land. Our hands would be open to heaven like a chick’s open mouth in anticipation of being fed.

Oh God in heaven come down. We are dying here without your burning love consuming us. We were reborn to be passionate, we were reborn to be lovers, we were reborn with a zeal for you that knows no bounds. We were reborn in your image Lord and we are designed to praise you. Oh that we would have eyes only for you. That we would put aside everything that vies for our attention and love you and come to you and be moved by you and anointed by you and inspired by you and revived by you and refreshed by you and forgiven by you. That we would know the heights of heaven and take some of that glory down into the valley of this world. Lord help me this day to come to you with an open heart so that I may stand with you under an open heaven.

The sheer joy of finding saints along the way!

Posted by appolus on September 12, 2017

After 27 years in the States I believe I have encountered most sects of Christendom It has been was very depressing to meet people so sold out to a doctrine, so lacking in love for Jesus Himself and so obsessed with portions of Scripture that are so often taken out of context as to make no sense on any level and on these differences they build divisions. Our grand obsession should be Jesus.

No matter where you go, if you find people whose grand obsession is Jesus you wont go far wrong. I want to meet people who love Jesus with all their hearts and souls and minds and body. I want to meet my brothers and sisters from every background, from ever tribe and from every tongue and from every nation. I want to walk along the pilgrim way a while with my fellow sojourners. It refreshes me and revives me and lifts me up.

We shall be known, it is written, by our love for one another. Give me a man or a women who has no agenda to push, no ministry to laud, no kingdom of his or her own to build, but simply loves Jesus with such a burning passion that all they want to do is talk about Him and what He has done for them, how He has changed them and transformed them, how he has filled them and fulfilled them. How He has completed them. How they would certainly die without Him, how they would have lost their minds without Him. How He lifted them from the gutters and made them to fly in heavenly places.

That is the folks I want to meet. New creatures in Christ. Next door down here at the lake the folks have an 18 month old baby and this morning he was in the canoe with them. He was looking around in wonder at the sky and the water and the trees and the hawks flying overhead. With wonder and awe he was taking it all in. It reminded me of my own new birth. The wonder of it all. To look at the world through virginal eyes, to see everything through the light of God. Behold, all things were new in the light of Him in the glory and the simplicity of loving Him. Lord, I want to ever walk in the glory and the simplicity of knowing you and wanting more of you and loving you and loving your creation and loving everything that you love.

A generation of prophets arise

Posted by appolus on September 12, 2017

I have met so many people who think the church is just fine and everything is the way it has always been and anyone who says anything different is generally castigated. There is a sizable remnant who do see it and I thank God for them. They are, of course, rejected and generally hated because they are in effect, party poopers. They don’t go along with the flow, they disrupt the flow, like a large stone in a flowing river, they cause turbulence and turbulence is uncomfortable and folks don’t want to be uncomfortable. They are for the most part sleeping and they do not want to be woken up. And this remnant are constantly shouting ” wake up you sleepy Christians, wake up, Christ is at the door and the bride must make herself ready to receive her King.”

How many of us can relate to lying in bed, warm, comfortable and cozy. Its winter outside and you are wrapped up in your bed. Then the alarm goes of. Who likes the alarm? It compels us to arise, get up! It is not a pleasant noise, in fact it is designed to be a most unpleasant noise. If it were pleasant we would simply roll over and go back to sleep. The rising remnant of God are His alarm. He is sounding His warning that the time is short. The message is hated. Generations of movements such as the prosperity gospel and the word of faith movement have seeped into Christendom like a contagion. A cancerous contagion that has infected us. The dream of many in the very early church was that they would be counted worthy of martyrdom for the sake of Jesus. How far we have fallen. This notion would almost always be rejected out of hand in our day. False prophets ply their trade in churches across the globe. They come and tell folks that this coming year will be better than the last, God has great things in store for you and breakthroughs will be yours. Now, you can add to that general theme, but it is always some variation of it..

The true prophet of God does not arise to tell folks things they want to hear, the very opposite is true. The prophets of God will always be rejected and despised. God is, in these last day, raising up a generation of prophets. Men and women who can see clearly the true state of things. They see that Jesus is on the horizon and it is a fire that burns in them. They see the approach of gross darkness prior to His return and they sound the alarm. They run from camp to camp and compel people to make sure they have their armor on, because they are going to need it. In most camps they find rejection, because even although it is written, they do not “see,” and they do not see it because they do not want to see it. If you see it, I want to encourage you today. God sees that you see. Yes you are misunderstood but that is part of the price. You find yourself isolated? Another part of the calling. You march to the beat of a different drummer? You speak of things the Lord has “shown,” you and people look at you like you are an alien? Then my friend and brother and sister in Christ you are on the path that the Lord has called you to. It is of course a calling. No one fully volunteers to be unpopular and to be hated and despised and rejected even and especially within their own communities.

The remnant of God are the broken of God. He breaks them by His own hand. Yet He does it in cooperation with His children. It can be traced back to a prayer that might have went something like this. “Oh God please use me, whatever it takes for me to be useful to you, so be it Lord.” Now, when you prayed that prayer you knew you touched heavens throne. What you did not fully realize was just how brutal the breaking would be. What you discovered in the midst of it was that despite the pain of it all God was faithful. You may have had long periods where you cried out “My God my God why has thou forsaken me,” but always in your heart of hearts you knew He was right there and He was your very sanity. You knew that no matter the circumstance or seemingly never-ending series of circumstances that He was shaping you, refining you, cleansing you. You were inevitably heading towards that place Paul found himself in when he said that he had learned to be content in ever situation. He had known what it was to abound in the things of life but he now knew what it was to be abased and still praise God. He knew how to have a full stomach and praise God and he knew how to be hungry and praise God. These are things that he learned, these are the lesson of God. At the start of that chapter in Philippians Paul starts out, and this is the point of the chapter to “stand fast in the Lord.” To the remnant saint who is reading this I say stand fast in the Lord. You are no alone, you are loved and you are called.

Overtaken by an immoral revolution.

Posted by appolus on September 5, 2017

“I don’t know, I’m not a good enough prophet to know what direction things are going to take. I do know that I hear strange things in evangelical circles these days. I hear people re-thinking things. We’re re-thinking Inspiration, we’re re-thinking the Deity of Christ, we’re re-thinking sin, we’re re-thinking morals.. “We’re re-thinking things. We’re even re-thinking whether God really created the heaven and the earth; and man after His Own Image. The evangelicals are now re-thinking things that the generation-ago-evangelicals took for granted and never gave a thought to. So I don’t know what direction we’re going to go from here. They asked me – a newspaper in Miami, Florida – whether I thought that there would be more unity in the church in the days to come, and whether I thought there ought to be. And I said no, I thought there ought to be more division. Because I thought that there ought to a group of godly people who wouldn’t be taken in by apostate churches and preachers, and that they ought to stand out and stand up and be counted…” ~ A.W. Tozer

One can only imagine what men like Tozer would make of the times in which we find ourselves today. There has been a slow boil of Christianity over the last few decades, like a frog put into lukewarm water. “The premise is that if a frog is put suddenly into boiling water, it will jump out, but if the frog is put in tepid water which is then brought to a boil slowly, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death.” Can I suggest that we as a society, and more specifically Evangelicalism and denominationalists, are being slowly cooked to death. The moral conscience of our institutions and nations has been seared. The skeletons have come out of the closet and have taken over in a revolution that most never saw coming.

On September 17th of 1793, in Revolutionary France, the law of Suspects was passed. This law allowed people who were merely suspected of opposing the revolution and its ideas to be arrested. Previously there was some semblance of procedure in the “tribunals” and some people were actually acquitted of the charges that they faced, mostly of being anti revolutionary. Now, because of pressure brought to bear, the procedure was “streamlined.” You could be arrested, “tried,” (without defense or the ability to call witnesses on your behalf) and executed all within three days. Marie Antoinette was an infamous example of this.

We in the west are now at the beginning stages of politically motivated courts who serve the immoral revolution. Those who oppose the ideas of this revolution are in the process of being criminalized. And those who call for that criminalization are no less zealous than the prosecutors of France’s reign of terror. Not surprisingly, a main contributor to France’s reign of terror was a journalist named Jacques Hébert, who was also a key witness in Marie Antoinette’s trial. He was also a central figure in the process of what was called “radical dechristianization.” This was embraced by the politicians and most of the people of Paris during the revolution. Can I suggest that there is now a process, again led by the media and politicians to “dechristianize,” our society.

We now live in a world where fighting against so-called homophobia and Islamophobia is a moral imperative. And just so we are clear, homophobia now describes anyone who disagrees with homosexuality in all of its many forms. The same is true of Islamophobia. And so, speech itself must now be criminalized. Speech is the expression of our thoughts and ideas and if these thoughts and ideas differ from the immoral revolution then they must be crushed by zealous and violent groups like ANTIFA, the so-called anti-fascists which is of course, a text-book example or irony for they themselves are the very essence of fascism.

Now, where does that leave genuine Christians? Where we have always been since the Church began. We are standing in the gap. We are the true moral conscience of the world. We represent Christ here on earth and as light we shall be violently opposed by darkness. And of course, when darkness has an opportunity to sweep away institutions and societies then its first and foremost target is the light that opposes it. To one degree or another this has been our role in the world since Jesus walked the earth. And it will be our role until He returns.Stand fast brothers and sisters and let the light of Christ shine out as we become the enemies of the state. Remember, your Lord and your God was also the enemy of the state and if they hated Him they will hate you. But be of good cheer for when they hate you without cause and for His sake, great is your reward in heaven.

The church that entertains.

Posted by appolus on September 1, 2017

The church that can’t worship must be entertained. And men who can’t lead a church to worship must provide the entertainment (A.W.Tozer)
In most of Christendom we are living with the triumph of form over substance and the evidence of that is the depth or lack thereof of Christianity in our society. Now three of four generations into an entertainment driven church we are left with a shallowness of showmanship that merely engages the “audience.” I would argue that all across Christendom we are seeing leaders who lead the people by providing entertainment.

You will hear excuses about staying relevant and keeping up with technology and so on. I personally have nothing against technology but when it becomes an integral part of creating a “show” on a Sunday morning then you know that the plot has been lost. Today we are being driven by the form and not the substance. The cultural winds have simply taken a hold of the church and the church is being driven along by these winds towards what destination? What is the end for such a church? The complete amalgam of the world with the church. This is a tragedy.

The hidden riches of darkness

Posted by appolus on August 31, 2017

I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. (Isa 45:2-3)

If the attitude is right, if in the depths of darkness we search out the Lord, we cry out to Him, we begin to praise Him, then we shall see the “treasures of darkness.” I often think about Paul and Silas in the depths of the dungeon, having that very day been scourged, how they began to praise God in the midnight hour. Down came the power of God and shook the whole building, the cell doors were opened and chains of the captives were broken as the light of Christ penetrated the darkness. Perhaps darkness has enveloped you today, can I suggest that the prayers and the praises of the saints and the Blood of Christ our Lord breaks every chain. We overcome the forces of darkness by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony and the fact that even when faced with death, we shall praise Him.

We are a starved generation!

Posted by appolus on August 29, 2017

We are a starved generation that has never seen the glory of God. We have men and woman in their 20s and 30s who have never seen the glory of God. They’re Christians, they’re in Bible schools, but they have never seen the glory of God. They have never known what it is to be in a service where the presence of God is so awe-inspiring that you cant speak aloud.

They have never heard God preached about so high and lifted up that they went home in silence and wouldn’t talk. When A.B.Simpson preached in Buffalo, New York, he preached on the glory of Jesus Christ and when he was finished , they dismissed the meeting and no one got out of their seats. They sat there because they were afraid to get up and walk around in the presence of God. But a whole generation of young people have never seen anything like that. “Oh God restore thy glory by whomsoever thout wilt restore thy glory.” (A.W.Tozer-Fellowship of the Burning Heart)

Tozer was writing about the problem of the age. Can I suggest that it is a deeper problem today. The departed presence of the Living God from Christendom is now almost complete. The stage is set. We have louder more professional music. We can get people to jump up and down. We can turn the lights down, we can have laser shows and dry ice to create smoke and try and conjure up something that resembles the Spirit of God, but God is not conjured up, He is called down.

The Living God is found among the humble and the contrite and the lowly in spirit. He is to be found in the silence and the quietness that accompanies a heart that longs to be found by Him. As the deer pants for the waterbrooks so must our souls longeth after Him. It is the truly hungry that finds a table set before them. It is the truly thirsty that finds living waters flowing from a river that makes the heart glad.

All of this is true personally and corporately. My suggestion is that you dismiss all of your professional “worship leaders.” Call for silence from the congregation. Let them wait upon the Lord to move. Empower them to stand up and begin to sing as they are led by the Spirit. As He lays a song upon their heart then let the congregation join in worship. Now brothers and sisters, the Lord is your worship leader. As you allow the Lord Jesus to be preeminent, then you will see the Spirit of God move among His people. They will not be entertained, they will be captivated by the power of His presence and they will be awe-struck.
