When my spirit is overwhelmed

Psa 142:3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path.
There is a certain kind of comfort to be had when we realize that even giants of the Bible, men like David, men after Gods own heart experienced being overwhelmed. Psalm 142 was one of two Psalms written from a cave the other being Psalm 57. Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed today? Maybe your situation is so dark that it is hard for you to see anything at all never mind anything good? Yet, God knows your path. He knows the road you have walked on. He knows how you ended up where you are. In Psalm 57 David starts out by saying that his soul trusts in God. He says he will find refuge in God, under the shadows of His wings until his calamities pass.
And therin lies the key to David overcoming. Even although he is desperate and his situation is desperate, he is not giving up on God. He says he trust in Him and will hide in Him until all his troubles pass. You see, something in David knew that his calamities would pass. The man or woman who has been on the road a long time knows that despite the fact that they have faced many difficulties and troubles, perhaps too many to mention, God has kept them. David also says ” I will cry unto God.” In our self-made world where we celebrate independence, it takes much humility to cry out to God, yet God hears the humble desperate cries of His children. Perhaps you need to cry out to God today?
In Psalm 57 we see that Davids many troubles have mounted up and surrounded him. He says that his soul lies among lions and that men are on fire against him, they have a burning hatred towards him and he is innocent of their hatred. You may find yourself surrounded by people and circumstances today that seemingly will overwhelm and destroy you but look at what David says right after that ” Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; let thy glory be above all the earth.”Psa 57:5 David exalts God in the very midst of his troubles. He states that his heart is steadfast. Despite the fact that things were looking very dark and at that moment he could see no way out, no way ahead, in the deepest recesses of who he was he knew who God was. He knew that even if he died in that cave, he would never give up on God.
This is what makes him a man after God’s own heart. It is this faithfulness even in the midst of seeming hopelessness that pleases God. Faith is the evidence of things not seen. Now that is a contradiction in terms is it not? If things are unseen how can it be counted as evidence? Yet it is this very belief in the unseen God, this trust that despite all the evidence to the contrary, God will move on our behalf that counts as faith. To praise God when there is nothing at all in the natural to praise God for is the supernatural Kingdom walk of the saint. This is truly what separates the Kingdom saint from the professing saint. God sees the path that men and woman walk. He sees how we got to where we are, He sees why and He sees the way ahead, He is the way ahead. He is a lamp unto our feet in the midst of darkness.
And so saints, you can tell God all of your troubles. You can tell Him of the despair that often-times comes knocking at your door. You can share all of your heart with your heavenly Father and know that is is not a lack of faith to feel overwhelmed. It is not a lack of faith to give voice to your fears. It is not a lack of faith to look out at the horizon of your life and see nothing good ahead or to open your eyes and see nothing but darkness. This is the times when we make declarations about the God that we know. We declare our trust in Him. We declare our exaltation of God and shout them into the darkness. As we do this we begin to ” awaken the dawn.” We all know that it is darkest just before the dawn yet in the very midst of that gross darkness we can begin to call upon the dawn to come. We do that by exalting the name of Jesus. We express to our God, out loud, our very foundational faith in Him. Let the principalities and powers hear that. Let the darkness be shaken by the evidence of things not seen. Let the unseen enemy of our souls be shaken by the unseen God of whom we have committed everything to. Let the darkness give way to light. Let the light of God pierce your situation today.
When your calamities pass, and they will pass in Him, you can rejoice that your heart was steadfast and your dependency was fully on Him. There are certain situations that only God can take us through and only God can get the glory. This builds our faith and is an opportunity for you to see God move in ways you could never have imagined. May God be praised this day and may the dawn break over the darkness that surrounds you this day.
