Out of the fire

Posted by appolus on May 9, 2015

furnacePsa 18:4-5 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.

One of the wonderful things about the Psalms and the Scriptures in general is that they are totally honest. We catch an insight into the troubles of the hero’s of our faith and we realize that to a great degree they are just like us. The words of David above are so honest. How many times have we been afraid? How many times in our lives have circumstances threatened to overwhelm us? We are confronted with situations that we think we cannot possibly handle and in the natural that may very well be true.

Yet just before that David starts out with ” I will love you o Lord my strength.” He declares that the Lord is his rock and his fortress, his shield, his salvation and his stronghold. And then he honestly declares to the Lord his situation and how he is feeling and dealing with everything that is coming against him. Dont you love that about our Lord? Dont you love that we can be honest with Him and be faithful to Him while being honest about the situations we are facing? I believe that the Lord loves this. He deals with His children exactly where they are.

You know, David knew a secret. There is a strength in declarations. To declare the truths that we stand upon even when we are surrounded by death, overwhelmed by the world and we are afraid. The Hebrew children I think were undoubtedly afraid. If King David was afraid then these Hebrew children were undoubtedly afraid but they say to the wicked King and to the death that faced them that even if we die in this fire we will never bow down to the gods of this world. You see I think this is real faith. When your situation seems to have no solution, when there seems to be no way ahead and death seems sure or circumstances seem certain to overwhelm us, we declare that we shall call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised. Whether we live He is worthy, whether we die He is worthy and whether circumstances seem to rob us of everything in this world, He is worthy to be praised because of who He is and what He has done for us.

Maybe right now you are faced with a set of circumstances that are not going to go away? A situation has run its course and has left you beaten and battered in the battle-field of life. Can I tell you that there is a God in heaven who picks people up from that very battle-field. David says in this Psalm that in his distress he called upon the Lord in heaven and that his cry was heard by God. He says that He made darkness His secret place. God can be found even in the deepest darkness brothers and sisters. He comes to you and draws you out of many troubled waters that surround you. David himself said that his enemies were too strong for him. In the day of his calamity his enemies confronted him but God had come. He had flown to him on the wings of the wind. In that humility David finds that in the very center of the storm God steps in. He will come to you brothers and sisters, He will come to you. God be praised, He will come to you. Cry out today and out of the very fire that threatens to consume you, God will ride out of it with you by His side.

Out of the fire

I will call upon the Lord
Who is mighty to be praised
Though the pangs of death surround me
To Him my hands are raised

And when the Lord had heard my call
Into the darkness He did ride
On the wings of the wind He came to me
Thunder and lightenings were by His side

Hailstone and coals of fire rained down
And the enemy fell one by one
You heard me oh Lord in my calamitous state
And out of the fire stepped your Son

You have made my feet like the feet of the deer
You have set me upon a high place
You have enlarged my path and given me life
As I looked into your glorious face

All praise, glory and honor to the One on the throne who is our Lord, Master and Savior! Salvation is his holy name! No matter what we face or how dire the circumstances our God is faithful and more than enough to turn the tide back our way! He is the Almighty One! El Shaddai! The one who sits above the circle of the earth and knows the heart, mind and soul of each person he has created! We praise you Lord! You alone are worthy of our adoration and we adore and love you with all of our being.
