Sharper than a two edged sword.

swordJoh 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

In another place God says through the Prophet “for God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” It is a wonderful place to be when you can see past someone’s exterior and look into their hearts. The proud man, the man who is smug in his own outward behavior is totally blind to the fact that the Lord knows the secrets of a mans heart. You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but a man can never fool God at any time. Saul was the obvious choice for King of Israel. He was tall and handsome and no doubt had charisma. David on the other hand was but a shepherd boy, just a lad, but God knew their hearts.

In Jeremiah 17 God says “But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” It is true is it not, the Lord is the searcher and the examiner of all motives? It is less about what you do rather it’s about why you do it. Jesus in John 7 was addressing the fact that they were angry enough to kill Him because He healed a man on the Sabbath. Men, so blinded by outward appearance, cared nothing for the sick man. They were the guardians of the Law and it had afforded them a position, and all they were truly interested in was their position and how things looked to other men.

Many years ago I was to give my testimony at some church. I was pondering about what to share and considering my father who played a prominent role in my testimony but not in a positive sense. My father had become a Christian at the age of 49 after living a very violent alcoholic life. To say that he was rough around the edges even long years after his conversion was putting it mildly. As I thought about this, I was judging him in my heart, me, judging a servant who was not mine. The Lord spoke into my heart and this is what I heard Him say which ran counter to my own personal feelings. The Lord asked me to imagine a scale of -10 to +10. Plus ten was the Lord Himself and was perfect. Minus ten was something very evil. Now the Lord asked me ” where was your father before coming to me?” I thought about this, I would have to say, because of his wickedness and all that he had done, about a minus three. ” Where is he now,” asked the Lord. I would have put him, based on his transformation, about a one on the scale. “Now where did you start and where are you now” the Lord asked. In my own estimation, I had started at a one and I was a three, at least two full points ahead of my dad on this imaginary scale of being Christlike. The Lord said to me ” Good, you see how far he has come? You see how far I have taken him? He has moved four points in your own estimation and you have moved two. I love him and I know how far he has come, I judge rightly Frank, you do not for you do not see the things of a man’s heart.”

This revelation put things in a proper perspective for me. God knows where He found us and God knows where we are now. We are a work in progress in His hands and the Lord loves His work, He loves it. He is the force that shapes men for His own good will and glory and makes them trophies of grace. A genuine Pharisee could care less about the work of the Lord in a man’s heart. He knows nothing of the spiritual and cannot be directed by the Spirit because he cannot hear the spirit, therefore, he can only judge by outward appearances. That is the only tool at his hand and it is a blunt one designed to crush those who do not come up to the outward standards that he has made himself the guardian of. It is devoid of love and genuine care, full of dead men’s bones as Jesus put it.

Saints, let us hear the Holy Spirit speak to us in regard to those who are around us. Do not judge according to their outward appearances but rather look to the One who gives us discernment. In that gaze you will find that you will always seek the best in men and always go the extra mile. No doubt many times you will have to shake the dust off your feet and leave the man behind who refuse to hear, but it will typically be a last resort and not the first action. God bless you brothers and sisters as you move forward in this world looking at people with Spirit’s eye and listening to that small still voice of God for it is alive and active and sharper than any two-edged sword and it penetrates even to dividing of soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart and not the outward appearance.
