THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS

Posted by appolus on February 20, 2026

There’s a phrase we use in the world: “The devil is in the details.”

It’s usually applied to negotiations or contracts, a warning to examine how things will actually work out. But there is another application to that phrase.

When you are in a trial, in a tribulation, and you allow your mind to go over and over and over every aspect of the circumstance, something begins to happen. You surrender control of your mind.
We are told to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Yet when we rake over every detail of what has happened, rehearsing it, replaying it, analyzing it, and then telling one person, and then another, and another, adding to it each time, we are not walking in that obedience. We are multiplying our sorrows.

The Scripture says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

Notice, peace is connected to where the mind stays.

Think about this.

How does a bird feed its young? It regurgitates food from its stomach back into the mouths of its chicks. That is how nature works.

But when we regurgitate, and let’s use the plain word, vomit, our circumstances to five other people, and then they begin to add their own details to our story, we are not seeking peace. We are reliving it. We are feeding on it again.

The apostle Paul instructs us clearly: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).

The guarding of the heart and mind comes after we bring it to God, not after we rehearse it before men.

Instead, when we continually retell and relive the circumstance, we rake over the ashes and coals of what has happened. We fan embers back into flame. We reset the fire of the circumstance rather than bringing it to the Lord and finding peace in Him.

We forget that the Lord was not in the wind, nor in the earthquake, nor in the fire, but in the still small voice (1 Kings 19:11–12).

And that stillness cannot be heard in a mind that is constantly agitated.

So remember this, brothers and sisters:
Unless you are in a place of peace, unless you have quieted your mind enough to hear the still, small voice of God, do not regurgitate the story. Do not relive it again and again.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

If the treasure becomes the injury, the offense, the trial, then the heart will remain there. But if the treasure is Christ, then the mind will return to Him.
You are not glorifying the Lord by rehearsing the wound. You are not edifying your brothers and sisters by spreading the ashes.

And you are not strengthening yourself by reliving the fire.

You are adding to your sorrows (Psalm 16:4).

In the eye of the Storm

Posted by appolus on July 12, 2025

In the fierce heart of every storm, there lies a sacred stillness , a place untouched by the chaos that rages all around. That stillness is Christ. He is not on the edge, not watching from afar , He is at the very center, the calm within the tempest, the anchor of our souls.

When we run to Him, we do not escape reality , we enter into a deeper one. We step into perfect peace, not because the storm ceases, but because the Prince of Peace reigns within it. But if we flee, if we try to outrun the storm in our own strength, we hurl ourselves into its fiercest winds. The resistance grows, the fear swells, and we are battered by every gust.

Brothers and sisters, run to the center. Run to Jesus. For in Him, the storm loses its power, and the winds fall silent in the shadow of His presence. He prepares a table for us in the heart of every storm. He causes us to lie down in green pastures , beside still waters. He anoints us with oil and restores us. This goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives.

Out of the fire

Posted by appolus on May 9, 2015

furnacePsa 18:4-5 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.

One of the wonderful things about the Psalms and the Scriptures in general is that they are totally honest. We catch an insight into the troubles of the hero’s of our faith and we realize that to a great degree they are just like us. The words of David above are so honest. How many times have we been afraid? How many times in our lives have circumstances threatened to overwhelm us? We are confronted with situations that we think we cannot possibly handle and in the natural that may very well be true.

Yet just before that David starts out with ” I will love you o Lord my strength.” He declares that the Lord is his rock and his fortress, his shield, his salvation and his stronghold. And then he honestly declares to the Lord his situation and how he is feeling and dealing with everything that is coming against him. Dont you love that about our Lord? Dont you love that we can be honest with Him and be faithful to Him while being honest about the situations we are facing? I believe that the Lord loves this. He deals with His children exactly where they are.

Have you cried until there’s no more tears to cry?

Posted by appolus on December 13, 2013

Since the beginning of time, there has been this question, or some form of it ” Why do bad things happen to good people?” Some philosophers have asked ” What is justice?” Now Christians are not immune to these thoughts or questions, in fact I would argue, that we will all ask that question to one degree or another at some point in our walk, maybe at many points in our walk.

Now there are certain times in our life when it is not just one bad thing that happens. Sometimes they overlap don’t they? They threaten to overwhelm us and those initial questions are simply intensified as we try to figure out what is going on and what is the purpose of it all. Many of  you will readily identify with these times. They are specific times when the enemy comes in like a flood and threatens to drown us in our circumstances. We scramble in our minds to make sense of it all. We hear familiar Scriptures from our hearts reminding us that God will never leave us nor forsake us yet that is exactly how we feel, left and forsaken and then the hammer drops again.
