The presence of God

Posted by appolus on June 2, 2015

Beautiful red roseExo 33:7 And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.

The tabernacle was outside of the camp, it was at a distance from the people. The people had sinned greatly and publicly in their worship of the idols of this world and now the tabernacle was taken outside the camp. It is comforting to note that the tabernacle, simply meaning dwelling place, could still be seen by the people. It was right there, within sight of them and they were encouraged to seek the Lord. ” And it came to pass that everyone who sought the Lord went out to the tabernacle of meeting which was outside the camp.” Now before doing this we learn that they stripped themselves of their “ornaments.” These ornaments were rings and ear-rings and so on, riches from the world they left behind that had been used to create an idol which they had bowed down and worshiped and had corrupted themselves with in the sight of God.

Now God had decided not to destroy these people, He would send an angel to accompany them to a land that had been promised to Abraham. God is a God of His word. Yet to walk the land outside of the presence of God was an unmitigated disaster. What would any of the promises fulfilled mean if it meant the departure of God from their midst? You could dwell in a land of milk and honey, you could gain victory over all of your enemies, you could adorn yourselves with the riches of this world but what would any of it matter if you did not have God dwelling in your midst and burning in the depths of your heart. Jesus put it another way, what would it profit a man if he gained the whole world but lost his soul. Is it possible to have huge congregations and followers yet not have the presence of God? Is it possible to be successful on the outside in your chosen profession or ministry, at least according to how the world measures success, but be cut of from the presence of God?

Moses says to God ” If your presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.” In other words Moses was saying “I would rather die here in the desert if I have to live without your presence.” Now Moses had mighty promises from God yet all of these things meant nothing to him if he could not have Gods presence. For the same chapter tells us that it is Gods presence in our lives that separate us from the rest of the world. His presence with us and in us marks us as unique amongst all the Peoples of the world. Without His presence, without His life and breath in us, then we are merely an army of dry bones rotting in the desert. If the life of God and His manifest presence does not dwell with us or our congregations then we must seek His presence or be abandoned to the wastelands of this world. I want to give you two examples of what I am speaking of when I am speaking of His manifest presence. I could give you personal examples but these two letters I received from people from two very different perspectives will help you to understand your own position better or the position of your own congregation. The first letter is from a woman…………….

“I have heard there was a time when you could go into a church and feel the presence of God. You would tiptoe in and cry at the altar and tiptoe out. You would talk about church all day and at bedtime. You would talk to your neighbors about the Lord. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Does your church have God’s presence there? When we witness to neighbors about the Lord, do we tell them about our church, do we tell them about the programs we offer? Do we tell them about our softball team or about our free espresso from our Coffee Bar? Or, do we say, just come and you will meet God. Come to Him and He will reveal Himself to you if you will humble yourself .I was saved about 6 years ago, now I am in my mid 40s. I hear about the old days from all the grey headed ladies in church. I am hungry for God’s manifest presence and I need to know what to do about it. What are we doing wrong? Is my church under judgment? Or our nation? Is there churches out there experiencing God where the Spirit is moving and people are confessing and their lives are being changed? They are living for Christ and dying to self and carrying their cross? Jesus, please show yourself.”

This is a tragic letter I am sure you would agree. If God has left the congregation, then it is incumbant upon the congregation of the people to seek their own hearts, to strip themselves of their ” ornaments,” and come seek the Lord outside of the camp where He can be found. We must make movement towards Him. He will be found by those who seek Him as the deer panteth for the waterbrooks. If your gathering is devoid of the manifest presence of God, not if your congregation is successful as the world measures success, but if it is devoid of the manifest presence of God will you simply continue on your journey? Would Moses? Would Moses not rather simply die in the barren wilderness that is our place when God is outside the camp? This next letter is from a brother who describes the impact the manifest presence of God has had in his life………..

“I was overshadowed by the Presence of the Spirit of God. In that moment I felt His deep love rest upon me… an indescribable release and rapture in my spirit, accompanied by a peace and a joy unspeakable that only comes from the Holy Spirit…it felt as if my innocence was completely returned to me in that moment before God, and indeed it was, as the Blood of the Lamb was sprinkled over my sins. It was in that moment, while the Spirit of God was upon me, that I humbly looked up into heaven and I worshipped Him who made the Heavens and the Earth. It was in that moment that I decided that I would love the God of heaven forever…I decided this, and I told Him so. In that moment I understood the beauty of the Lord, His magnificence and His majesty; I felt my soul knit to the Lord. My soul loves Him above all else in this life, for He is my lot and my portion forever. In that moment I understood Him in the depths of my spirit; I cried out to the one who formed me from the dust of the Earth and I said to Him…I will love you in my heart forever! I made my abode with Him, and He came into my heart and He made His abode with me.”

Now I know this brother and he has had a very difficult life, his journey has not been easy but you will not hear him testify of that, his testimony is to the glorious God who has deemed to walk through his journey with him. This is what makes the true Christian life possible, our walking with Him, not in some theological sense, but in His very real manifest presence. This is our strength, this is our joy, this is our peace, this is our testimony. God with us, God before us, God above us, God who goes ahead of us, God who burns in the depths of who we are and who has ruined us for the things of this world to such a degree that if we cannot walk in His presence then we have no desire at all to be on this earth. The times of refreshing from His presence is the very strength of our life. Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord. ~ Acts 3: 19 Do you have your times of refreshing brothers and sisters? Who could walk through a dry and dusty land without the living waters of His presence to revive our souls in times of need and in times when the Lord overshadows us?

Honor and majesty are [found] in His presence; strength and joy are [found] in His sanctuary. ~ 1 Chronicles 16: 27(AMP)

And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” ~ Exodus 33: 14

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16: 11

You shall hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the plots of man; You shall keep them secretly in a pavilion from the strife of tongues. ~ Psalm 31: 20

Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.
~ Psalm 51: 11

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence?
~ Psalm 139: 7

When my enemies turn back, they shall fall and perish at Your presence. ~ Psalm 9:3

The earth shook; the heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God; Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel. ~ Psalm 68: 8

So beautifully put brother Frank, he is so full of compassion for those whom seek him who desire him, his very presence above all, whom love him with their whole heart. Thanks

Yes indeed sister, with their whole hearts. If you do a study of that phrase ” whole heart,” it is amazing just how important it is to God that we are fully given to Him……………..bro Frank

Amen ! This post breathes the understanding God had to HIT me with a few years ago !

Praying He would “bless” some person or situation, I was aware the Spirit was saying quietly, “You’re praying all wrong.” When I stopped and listened, He went on: “You pray for blessings as if they’re poker-chips I push across the table to people.” It was true, and I said, “Yes, Lord…?” He said, “The ONLY blessing is My Own Presence.”

So I say to you, brother Frank, and to all who read…blessing to you. Amen !
