What does this word ” remnant,” mean?

Posted by appolus on April 24, 2013

I would like to clarify for some just what I believe to be God’s remnant children. To use any word over and over again it can begin to take on a life of its own and that can happen with the word remnant. A remnant child of God is simply someone who genuinely knows Jesus, someone who has been truly converted. Now, why the distinction, why even use any other name rather than simply ” Christian?” Well, I am certainly not stuck on the name, to me it is more of an adjective that a noun. It simply describes what Jesus was talking about when He says ” many are called , but few are chosen.”(Matt 22:14) Now, just as that was true when Jesus spoke it then, it is equally true now. The context of that scripture comes from the previous chapter when Jesus showed , though parable, that men would not give to God what was rightfully His, instead they rejected and killed His son. Now in chapter 22 Jesus uses another illustration , this time a wedding, which people are too busy to come to.

So, Jesus establishes that the invitation is there before men to give to God what is His, to come when invited, but by and large they reject this, and only a relatively small number accept. This same invitation exists today. Now, let us look at the name Christian. In a western world that by and large calls itself Christian by name and by birth, then we have to have a further distinction because we know that simply being born into a ” Christian,’ household does not make one a Christian. Neither does calling one-self a Christian make that person a Christian. There needs of course, to be a genuine conversion, a new creature in Christ, a new birth actually and not merely theologically and of course there are marks of this new birth. Now, C.S.Lewis, more than half a century ago, wrote about the fact that the term ” Christian,’ had lost it’s meaning. He used the word ” Gentleman, to illustrate what he meant.

More than three-hundred years ago, in England, the term ” Gentleman,” meant that one was a landowner. If you did not own land, you were not a Gentleman. Now, over the following decades and centuries, whether men owned land or not, they began to call themselves Gentlemen, thus emptying the actual meaning of the word. Lewis was arguing that this was exactly what has happened to the word ” Christian.” I agree entirely with Lewis and of course, things have not improved in the last 50 or so years. And so the definition of the word remnant is , as a noun, ” a small remaining quantity of something.” As an adjective ” remaining.” Websters defines the word to mean ” a small surviving group.” Now, if 7000 did not bow the knee to Baal and there was roughly a population of seven million in that day, that means that for every one thousand people, only one had not bowed the knee to Baal.

If we extrapolated that number to today, that would mean there were just over three million in the USA who had not bowed their knees to the gods of today. I am not suggesting such a low number, I personally think it is much higher than that, but you get the idea. And so, as we move on down through the centuries from Pentecost, we begin to see a religious kingdom built by men who believed they were doing the work of God, for the most part this kingdom was the kingdom of Catholicism. This is what I would call ‘ Christendom.” The world of Christendom is everything that calls itself Christian. Yet, only a relatively small number stood against the heretical teachings of the Catholic church down through the ages. We now know them as martyrs, but in their day they were known as heretics by Christendom.

You can read about these people in many different publications, Foxes Book of Martyrs is an excellent resource as is ” The Pilgrim Church.” And so, in all of those ages, including the dark ages, God had a witness, God had His Church and the gates of hell could not prevail against it, even although they came at it with all of Hell’s fury. Now, as it always was then so it is today. Christendom is by and large made up of religious people who have not been genuinely born again. And just as there is marks of those who have been born again, obviously those who have not will have their own marks, the marks of the world. And of course we see that in divorce rates and so on that are no different, and in some cases higher than the world. And so, while there are baby Christians and mature Christians and weaker Christians and everything in between in genuine Christianity, there is also to be found the genuine transformation.

Well, if this has always been the case and today is just the same really as it has always been, then why is there any urgency in the genuine Church? Well, I believe it is because of the prophetic calendar. And by that I mean that so many in God’s Body believe that the return of the Lord is coming soon, perhaps even in our own lifetime. Now one may argue that Christians have always thought that. I would argue that without the return of Israel and other prophecies then the prophetic clock could never really have begun to come close to the time we are now approaching. And what time is that? Well, since I do not believe in a pre-trib rapture, nor do I believe in dominionism, then I believe that the birth pangs have begun and there is a count-down to the time of severe persecution. A persecution so bad that if the Lord did not shorten those days then there would simply be no genuine Christians left alive prior to the return of Jesus. Now with persecution I will argue that the Lord will pour out His Spirit on His people in order for them to be equipped to handle such worldwide persecution.

And because the persecution will be so severe, then the Spirit will be poured out as has never been seen before, in essence, the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea because persecution will be worldwide. Now, this takes us back to the remnant children, simply the genuinely converted. As the denominations and churches continue their slide into compromise, it will become increasingly difficult for genuine believers to stay where they are. And, when you add to that scenario the removing of God’s presence from these churches, it will simply become intolerable for genuine Christians to stay in these places and they will begin to come out, and have been now for quite some-time. As the light begins to be removed from these churches by the removal of the light-bearers, the genuine Christians, then the denominations and dead churches will more and more identify with the world and with the State. This will set them up to become part of a World church and at the same time set them up to eventually become the deadliest enemies of the genuine Christian who cannot and will not stand by and be part of an every sliding, ever darkening compromising establishment.

Yet, the genuine Christian has always loved his genuine brothers and sisters and loves to fellowship with like-minded passionate Spirit filled believers. And so, they will find each other and as the end of ages come, they will comfort and encourage one another. Brothers and sisters, we are living in these times right now. Now it may be the beginning of the process, but the process , the great falling away is already well under way and is setting the stage for what is to come. Our life time? Very possibly. Our children or grandchildren’s life-time? Almost certainly. Yet saints, even if it were 100 year off ( which I do not believe) God would already be preparing His children for the end of the age. Now, more than ever, we must be able to hear that small still voice and know the Word of God. Now, more than ever, we must cherish the genuine presence of God in the midst of so much counterfeit. Stay close to the Lord and look for His lead and follow His directions. Hold the things of this world loosely ( as we should always do anyway) and trust in Him and lean not on our own understanding.

    Definition of RESIDUE

: something that remains after a part is taken, separated, or designated or after the completion of a process : remnant, remainder: (Webster)

Did you notice in the gospels that the Master was always sifting, always reducing things down – whenever the crowds came He would say or do something extreme, something offensive to them, and the ranks would be thinned almost immediately. “Do you wish to leave too?” He asked the 12.

This sifting, this separation, this reducing (the wheat, the wise virgins, the bride, etc.) is something the many will have nothing to do with. They don’t even discuss it, for they are concerned with adding not subtracting. If 50 are in attendance they want 100 and more, so everything they do and say is concerned with this increase. An inch deep and a mile wide is considered success and they praise God for it. Not so with the Lord. There were 12 sons of Jacob but only one Joseph. There were many sons of Jesse but only one David. There are always many called but few chosen. There is only one bride of the King, although there are many maidens in the palace!

This reduction, this concentration requires heat, pain, loss, ignominy, terrible suffering and extraction, blood, sweat, tears….

What remains is the remnant, the residue, the pure things separated from the impure. The dross must be burned away from the gold. There are many sons but only a few among the first-born who will inherit the kingdom.

“Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have nothing in me.” “Unless you are born again…”

“Amen” the many say, but they have no idea what this means, what it requires, what it will do to them if they actually submit to as a living spiritual reality.

These have become mere religious teachings, doctrines, platitudes – not existential and eternal realities forged in the soul.

When the many fall behind and go back, the remnant go on as living sacrifices. Their love and devotion is white-hot, not lukewarm or cold. Those truly among the remnant will never ever deem themselves so; they will esteem others as such yes, but never themselves.

Yet the Lord knows. He knows all those who have laid their head on His bosom and their lives in His care.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,” (Eph. 6:10-18)

Bro Frank – your comments above above the adjective “christian” and the noun “christendom” harken one to very Word of God, where Satan makes even darkness appear as light. America, for example, is not nor ever was a fundamentally “christian” nation. It was founded by very enlightened, inspired men who were masons and deists primarily. Their agenda was honorable in ones sense, but it was political and earthly. The name of Jesus Christ was employed to advance purely political ambitions. He is never pleased when this is done, and He will express that displeasure when He as the Lamb opens the book and removes the seals. Of course, most in this country will resent these statements but they are fact and they are indisputable. The devil repeats a lie over and over again until it becomes a truth. He hates the name of Jesus Christ more than anything as it represents his ultimate undoing.

The remnant of the Lord and all those represented in it can never be politicized or even patriotic in the common sense of the term. They are citizens of the kingdom and they know exactly what that means and requires. Their loyalties are non-negotiable. They serve the King and His Kingdom, and their is a gospel of this kingdom – the good news that one day soon the Lamb that was slain will reign over all creation starting with this planet and all that is in it. He alone owns history the and future. He alone has the claim to open the book and to remove the seals of what it to come, the undoing of the nations, including this one from where I am writing these words.

The remnant will withstand and stand in this evil day. They will stand in Christ when everything else in in the dragon, including the USA and all her leaders. They will stand outside when everything inside has been corrupted by the Father of Lies, yes even the church on the corner. They do not take political sides, they take the side of their Master in all things. They see with His piercing eyes all that is deception and distraction. Their heart belongs to Him alone, not to parties, agendas, issues, causes, that however well intentioned, have not the seal of the Lord on them. To them freedom is not the ultimate right, but hey have taken their freedom and placed their necks in the yoke of the Lord. They are bondslaves to Him, having been purchased with His precious blood. They live and breathe and stand and walk and do this or do that only as He leads and enlivens them. They are soldiers yes but they fight for a kingdom not of this world, and their weapons pierce so much more than flesh, but souls and spirit and the very lies of the dragon all around them.

Dear ones, saints and beloved of the Lord – will you then stand with the Christ who has saved you? Will you remove yourself from all that is not of Him? Will you come out and be counted with Him alone? The day that id coming will find you out, just as will me.

“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,” (Eph. 6:10-18)

Two Words from Hebrews – terrifying and chilling and searching words that will find each of us out –

See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape who turn away from Him who warns from heaven. And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN.” This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire…

We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy place by the high priest as an offering for sin, are burned outside the camp. Therefore Jesus also, that He might sanctify the people through His own blood, suffered outside the gate. So, let us go out to Him outside the camp, bearing His reproach. For here we do not have a lasting city, but we are seeking the city which is to come.

Everything brother will be shaken (you me everything; in fact if we will not allow Him to shake us now to the division of soul and spirit then we will be shaken to rejection later), to reveal all those who have true and steady foundations. All that is not in and of Christ Jesus will be removed. This is why the Living Creatures extol and honor Him without ceasing, they cannot stop actually for they know and see and fear this One who is a Consuming Fire. He alone has the right, the authority to open the book and to remove the seals. He suffered and was scorned by His own and then offered up outside the camp, a lamb to the slaughter, bearing full reproach and the shame that was really ours to bear. So where do most christians look for Him? Where do most teachers tell the people to come? Inside the walls, for they are not willing to go out and share in His reproach. Here is the key dear saints – who are the remnant indeed? They are the ones, the few, the one out of many willing to bear His reproach, to go outside the camp where the many play religious games and deceive their own souls unto destruction. They refuse Him who is speaking outside the walls. He said “come and see” and “follow me” yet they remain inside their safe and reproach-less city (all of this devilish thing called christendom). Where are all the prophets – outside the walls, beyond the Jordan, crying in the wilderness. Where then are you? and me?

Remember these words for they will find you out – “outside the camp” and “burned” and “consuming fire”! Oh how terrifying is this One called the Lamp! Oh how fearful and dreadful is His Wrath!

Let the following pierce your very soul –

1I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a book written inside and on the back, sealed up with seven seals. 2And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?” 3And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the book or to look into it. 4Then I began to weep greatly because no one was found worthy to open the book or to look into it; 5and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”

6And I saw between the throne (with the four living creatures) and the elders a Lamb standing, as if slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. 7And He came and took the book out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne. 8When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9And they sang a new song, saying,
“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
10“You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”

11Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, 12saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”
13And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, “To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever.”

14And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen.” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

WORTHY INDEED! Do we fall down in our hearts always before this Awesome One who is consuming, who is the sum of all Glory and Honor and Worthiness and Majesty? Oh Lord that we might see and know what these living creatures know of Thee, what they see in Thee, and that we might be ruined for all else, everything that is a mere shadow or image of Thee!

Who is the remnant, the bride of the King? They are the ones who can truly say amen (let it be done) to all of this!

Most of you reading these words to be honest have no idea what we are talking about, for you have yet to go out to where He actually is, you have yet to meet Him as the Lamb that was slain! You dont wnat to get blood on your hands or in any way bear such reproach. You don’t want to dirty your sunday clothes. May His grace be upon you in this dark and urgent hour!

Amen brother Wayne. I agree that the key aspects of what we share is the fact that Jesus is to be found outside the camp, outside the walls, outside the gates. In those days, the walls represented security and belonging. To be outside the camp was to be outside of fellowship with the rest of society and to be in a dangerous place. Yet, Jesus was to be found in a place called Golgotha, outside of the gates, but within view of the city so that all could see. To leave the security of the walls behind us, we must be willing to find all of our security and belonging in Jesus. If any part of our heart belongs to the city, we will be tempted to look back with longing as judgment begins to pour down upon it, just as Lots wife looked back. Abraham also left his place of belonging, his homeland, and never looked back. It is an eternal city that we seek and we have been called to be sojourners and pilgrims in this voyage of life. Jesus alone is our anchor and only in Him can be found our place of refuge, where He is, is the harbour of our souls………………bro Frank

“The Lord said to Gideon, ‘The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands, for Israel would become boastful, saying, “My own power has delivered me.” 3 Now therefore come, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, “Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.” ‘ So 22,000 people returned, but 10,000 remained.

Then the Lord said to Gideon, ‘The people are still too many; bring them down to the water and I will test them for you there…’ ” (Judges 7)
