Poems for the Weary

Posted by appolus on March 22, 2012

Weariness is a dreadful thing. The definition of weariness is……..

“physically or mentally fatigued, having one’s interest, forbearance, or indulgence worn out.”

Oftentimes Christians do not want to admit to weariness. It may seem like a lack of faith to acknowledge one’s weariness. Of course this is not the case. Every Christian will walk through all the seasons of life and will experience every facet of life, he will be immune from none. Yet, as in all things, we are not defined by one season of our lives, nor are we defined by individual incidents in our lives, aren’t you glad about that? We shall be known by the thrust of our lives. It’s not about falling down, you will fall down, it’s about getting back up. Who amongst you believe that you will not fall down in this life? Idealists and younger Christians are particularly vulnerable when they fall. It’s a very humbling thing to fall down. Gal 6:9-10………..

And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. (NAS)

You see the Scriptures are acknowledging that it is possible to lose heart. Its saying “cmon, get up, you can do it, don’t stay down……..

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, (Heb 12:1)

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Heb 12:2)

We must ” lay aside,” every weight, everything that would stop us from getting back up again, every sin. Yet, we are not left to our own devices in this. The way that we lay aside that which weighs us down or a sin that would keep us down is by ” looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith.” This is the key to weariness, this is the key to every weight that would drag us down, every besetting sin. As we take our eyes off our circumstances, away from everything that holds us down including sin and cast our eyes upon Jesus, then in His presence we are renewed. We must look in the midst of the storm and find Jesus. We must invite Him into the boat. We cannot match our own strength with the strength of the storms that will come against us. We will exhaust ourselves and get no-where.

Joh 6:17-21 And entered into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. (18) And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. (19) So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. (20) But he saith unto them, It is I; be not afraid. (21) Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went.

We must willingly receive Him into our circumstances. Too many times panic sets in and we do what comes naturally, what the flesh demands that we do in the middle of a crisis.  In the natural there is “fight or flight,” in Jesus there is ” be still.” Stop, and look for Jesus in the midst of your circumstances. Do not let the waves and the winds of fear distract you from Jesus. Invite Him into the boat. Its His manifest presence that gets us to the other side. Its His manifest presence that fill us with joy, and its this joy that is our strength and it is this strength that we need if we are to throw off weariness, throw off every weight, every sin, everything that would keep us from continuing in doing good and bringing glory to Him. We must call out to Him, we must seek Him, we must find Him if we are to rise up with wings as eagles and fly in the updrafts of His presence where no flapping of wings is necessary. One must only spread out one’s wings and it is the updrafts of His presence that will carry you aloft.

He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
(Isa 40:29-31)

Who then is like our God

Who has measured out the waters
In the hollow of His hand?
Who has measured out the heavens
And measured them with a span?

Who created every star
And knows them all by name?
Who has knelt down at His feet
And still remained the same?

Who then is like our God
Who is brighter than the sun?
Who is Father, Son and Holy Ghost
Who is three but who is one

Lift up your eyes on high
And see the glory of our King
See the heavenly choirs of angels
Lift their voice to Him and sing

Man’s own strength it has an end
And even young men fall
But those who wait upon the Lord
Shall hear the Master’s call

Rise up, rise up ye weary saint!
And fly where eagle’s fly
You will run and shall not faint
You shall soar into the sky

I AM PERSUADED

What shall separate us from the Love of God?
In Christ alone we stand
No power in hell nor darkest foe
Shall take us from His hand

For the Love of God is a burning fire
That burns within our heart
To please our God is our one desire
And from that we shall never part

Though death may overtake us
And life may beat us down
There is no power on earth or hell
That shall keep us from our crown

He is higher than the highest heights
He is deeper than the deepest depths
He died for us on Calvary
And we shall follow His footsteps

For I am persuaded beyond a doubt
In Christ who set me free
So let the saints all give a shout
And worship Him eternally

We are more than conquerors in Christ our King
We stand with Him in victory
Neither life nor death nor anything
Shall chain the one’s that He set free

I AM A WALL OF FIRE

I am a wall of Fire
To my children in despair
The Lord God never tires
In silence He prepares

When all your walls are broken down
And you lift your voice and cry
The wall of fire will surround
For you are the apple of my eye

For you are my sons and daughters
And I dwell within your heart
Your enemies are prepared for slaughter
And from you I shall never depart

All ye people tremble
For the Lord my God awakes
And His children shall assemble
And die for His namesakes

Arise O God and shake the earth
For every man shall see
That God shall stand, and Him alone
In glorious majesty

HIS LOVE HAS NO END

Though I speak with the tongues of angels
That flows from heaven above
Will this add to my account
If I do not have love?

If I give my body to be burned
For all the world to see
Yet have no love within my heart
What would this profit me?

God’s love that burns within my heart
Is patient and is kind
It suffers long and looks to see
The good that it can find

The love of God it bears all things
It never seeks its own
Just like my Jesus on the cross
Where for my sins He did atone

One day I’ll know as I am known
My God who dwells on high
No longer shall I dimly see
I’ll see with Spirit’s eye

And when all things come to an end
And tongues they cease to be
And prophecies have been fulfilled
Then love shall be the key

For there is hope and there if faith
And both He gave to me
Yet the one that saved me from my sin
Was the love of Calvary

And of this love it has no end
For Christ shall ever be
Enthroned in glory, clothed in light
His love shall flow eternally

IN HIS PRESENCE

O for the glory of the risen King
Basking in your presence makes my heart sing
In your presence mysteries are revealed
In your presence I am healed

Rend the heavens, may your presence flow down
When I’m in your presence you are all around
You are vast beyond the heavens and you have no end
It’s an incredible thing that you have called me friend

Just one moment with you my King
Has ruined me for the rest of my days
You have ruined me for the things of this world
You have ruined me for all of its ways

For my eyes have seen the King
And I became undone
Your glory filled the temple
And your light outshone the sun

And now my heart is full of light
And fire you gave to me
And every part is full of love
That’s deeper than the sea

All of this from just one touch
One touch from the Master’s hand
I will worship you forevermore
And in your presence I will stand
