Blinded by men

Posted by appolus on December 2, 2014

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons.

You should trust no one, and even ignore the finest saint on earth if he blocks your sight of Jesus Christ ( Oswald Chambers)

There is a pandemic that is going on in Christendom. It has suffered this state for centuries. Men make idols out of men. Nothing should ever come between us and God. There is one mediator between man and God and it is Christ Jesus. Let us always be ready to look to Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith, let us never elevate men to where they block our sight of God. No matter who that is, he must be taken down so that we have a clear sight of Jesus.

Now if you really do this. If you yourself become no respecter of persons in the context of what has just been written, then you will not go far in the kingdom of men, but then again, why would you want to excel in the kingdoms of men unless you yourself would like to block another’s view of Jesus? Never let anyone elevate you. If you do, you are participating in their sin, for what you allow you are truly determining. This particular sin that so often falls into the camp of omission shall not be overlooked by God, He is a jealous God and He shall have none other before Him.

Many years ago, prompted by the Holy Spirit, I determined never to give any man a standing ovation. There was, the Holy Spirit showed me, only one man, the man Jesus, who deserved a standing ovation. Suddenly the nonsense of it just hit me. If everything that we have comes as a gift from God in His Body and therefore where is the boasting, then why the standing ovation, why the elevation of men if we truly believe that? Now, there is a price to pay for the non-elevation of men. If you do not play the games of men then many times men will not want to ” play,” with you. That is okay. As long as you can see Jesus. As long as you elevate Him. As long as you are compelled to stand and glorify Him then nothing else matters.

And so saints, elevate Jesus in your life, in your conversation and in your spirits. In doing this you will draw closer to Him, you will draw men to Him and you will advance the cause of His Kingdom here on earth. Determine in your heart not to elevate men or women. It does not matter how good a teacher they are, or how spiritual they are or how many people attend their church or how many books they have written, remember, they are just brothers and sisters in Christ and we are called to love and respect all as we love and respect Jesus. Practice this in your life and stay close to Jesus.

A strong witness we need to hear, brother: no standing ovation for any but Jesus.

Where the adulation of men impressed me as most insidious a few years ago was hearing folks in Sunday School read from the comments in their (for example) “John MacArthur Study Bible,” as if MacArthur’s words had the weight of scripture itself !

MacArthur’s hardly the only “celebrity” preacher in whom we see this hubris: and my Sunday School class hardly the only believers who are led astray by it.

    God forgive us !

    In Jesus, Steve

I believe we have all been guilty of it at one time or another. There are whole churches who adore their pastor and really the pastor likes it that way. Pride has always been one of the enemies most powerful weapons……………….bro Frank
