God, the Gospel, and Glenn Beck

Posted by appolus on August 31, 2010

Too often, and for too long, American “Christianity” has been a political agenda in search of a gospel useful enough to accommodate it. There is a liberation theology of the Left, and there is also a liberation theology of the Right, and both are at heart mammon worship. The liberation theology of the Left often wants a Barabbas, to fight off the oppressors as though our ultimate problem were the reign of Rome and not the reign of death. The liberation theology of the Right wants a golden calf, to represent religion and to remind us of all the economic security we had in Egypt. Both want a Caesar or a Pharaoh, not a Messiah.

God, the Gospel, and Glenn Beck.

Hi Robert, it has always been interesting to me the choice of Barabbus over Jesus and what that meant at a deeper level. Barrabus was a freedom fighter, a sedition man, a man willing to fight and kill Romans in his quest for ” freedom.’ I can see how that would appeal to people. While Beck is no Barrabus, there is a strong desire in America to see their Kingdom, established or maintained. Yet, 2000 years Jesus dissapointed this crowd, and I believe that the Jesus of the Gospel would be just as dissapointing to the crowd today. When Jesus informed the ” believers,’ of John 8 , when the appealed to their heritage, that their father was not Abraham , but the devil, they tried to stone Him.

Joh 8:31 Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed on Him, If you continue in My Word, you are My disciples indeed.
Joh 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

They took offence to the notion that they were not free. Incredible, is it not that such a simple and profound statement that we, to this day, use in every day life, would cause so much anger and hatred for Jesus in the hearts of ” believers.” And the end result of this conversation………

Joh 8:59 Then they took up stones to throw at Him. But Jesus hid Himself and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and passed on by.

Beware the man that stands up and tells the crowd that they are not free neither are they His disciples. Better to tickle the ears of the hearers , if fame and self-preservation is the aim, than to tell the truth and set the captives truly free. For the man who does this will be stoned or crucified. As long as mens eyes are on Rome or on a common enemy, their eyes will not be on Jesus and the beam in their eye will kill them………brother Frank

Amen, there is no American gospel. Paul said if anyone preaches any other gospel than the one that I we have preached let them be accursed.

The only gospel is The Lord Jesus crucified.
