The gates of Hell.

Posted by appolus on June 3, 2018

I have written several times in the past about the tactics of the Nazis in shutting down free speech through violence and intimidation. Anyone who did not toe the party line was targeted for assassination and that included communists and socialists, trade unions, Christians and of course Jews. Unless you walked in lockstep with their ideology you were outed and shamed then targeted for violence.

“In Berlin, under the leadership of Goebbels, so-called Rollkommandos were organized for the purpose of disrupting political meetings of all non-Nazi groups. These Roll kommandos were charged with interrupting, making noise, and unnerving the speaker. Finally the Nazis broke up meetings by Rollkommando raids. In many cases, fights resulted, during which furniture was destroyed and a number of persons hurt. The Nazis armed themselves with blackjacks, brass knuckles, rubber truncheons, walking sticks, and beer bottles.” (https://fcit.usf.edu/holocaust/resource/document/DOCNAC8.htm)

You can see how the tactics of interrupting meetings with crowds and noise in an effort to intimidate the speaker was a mainstay of the Brown-shirts of the Nazi party. In an intolerant society that is heading towards totalitarianism, all opposition, any voice that does not hold to the group-think view must be silenced. The very first step in the march towards the breakdown of civilization as we know it is to end civil discourse . There can be no quarter given to any opposing views and those holding any opposing views must be demonized. Demonization is the first step on the road to dehumanization. It has been the favored tactics of terror down through the ages.

I would like to suggest that we have entered into the beginnings of such a time once again. We have, it seems, learned nothing from the past. Free speech is the cornerstone of Democracy and a free and civil society. A free and neutral press is another cornerstone. It is not good enough to a free press, that is only one side of the coin. Unless the press is neutral then we may see a thousand little Goebbels running cover for their political overlords.

“Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect. Truth is unimportant and entirely subordinate to tactics and psychology.”

Goebbels here is making the argument that sentiment and emotion are much more powerful than truth and of course he is correct. If you can brand someone a racist or an Islamaphobe or bigot and a hater, it matters not whether they are any of these things or not, just launch these words into the hot air of emotion and psychology and watch them take flight.

“This is the secret of propaganda: Those who are to be persuaded by it should be completely immersed in the ideas of the propaganda, without ever noticing that they are being immersed in it.” (Goebbels)

I would like to suggest to you that there is an immersing going on today. If one is to be immersed there must be deep waters or a flood. Today’s society in the west has been flooded by an extreme ideology. Those who do not conform to the ideals of this ideology will be publicly shamed, they will be “outed,” shouted down, intimidated, fired from their jobs, ridiculed and ruined such is the hatred that fills our atmosphere. A woman was questioned for a documentary on the rise of the Third Reich. She was asked how she managed to fall for and be so passionate about something so hateful and destructive. Her answer has stuck with me for decades and it haunts me. “There was something in the atmosphere and we all breathed it in.”

I would like to suggest that there is a poison in the atmosphere and the world at large is breathing it in. It is deliberately breathed in because it connects to the primal hatred that there is beating in the heart of man. A desire for revenge, a desire to see those we disagree with destroyed an inability to hear views that we disagree with. Each step of the downward spiral is volitional. We deliberately take each step as we descend slowly but surely ever deeper down to the gates of hell. And when we collectively arrive there, the gates are open and hell rushes forward and we are consumed.

Definitely agree with you in seeing very strong parallels between this time and the growth of Nazism in 1930s Germany.

As it does to you, the explanation “There was something in the atmosphere and we all breathed it in” seems striking, and accurate. There simply is a “spirit of the time:” the spiritually undiscerning (always a great majority, in any time and place) imbibe it deeply, and “go with it.”

So it is that Jesus calls out “the crowds” (NOT the Pharisees and scribes) as “hypocrites,” and demands of them, “…why do you not analyze this present time ?” (The Greek for “analyze” here is a rewarding study.)

You’re spot-on that “demonization” is the purpose. It is, after all, the default mindset of natural man that the world consists of “us” and “them.” “We” are (of course) decent, honorable, “good” people: “they” are evil, and therefore unremittingly evil-intentioned …especially toward “us.” It’s the fleshly worldview that Galatians 5:20 calls “factions” (literally, “dividings”), and the core doctrine of every politico-social “movement” by which satan misleads the undiscerning.

The means by which the Nazis achieved their purpose is what historians have called “The Big Lie.” Repeated insistently and loudly, the lie that other people are the cause of all “our” problems easily becomes the operative “truth” for those who will not discern, and choose not to “receive the love of the truth, so as to be saved” (II Thess. 2:10).

The parallels of purpose and technique by today’s political deceivers is manifest.

Pondering the similarities of this time with 1930s Germany, another parallel comes to mind.

Nazis, and eventually all Germans, were taught the Führerprinzip (“leader principle”). Party-members, and then all Germans, were indoctrinated in the belief that the fundamental basis of all authority (first political, and then state) was the person and will of the Fuhrer.

It’s not hard to see that some members of his party, and some voters (who may or may not have any loyalty to that party), regard the current president with some degree of Führerprinzip. For them, his words are not subject the judgement of truth, or his actions to the restraints of law.

For Christians, who know the spiritual identity of the “father of lies” and “the man of lawlessness,” the Führerprinzip is more than a POLITICAL belief on which autocratic dictatorship is erected. It is a spiritual belief, whose authorship is manifest.

Hi Steve, it is more likely that people’s fanaticism for the previous president has caused the kind of riots we see at College campuses and so on where any speaker, not given to a certain ideology , is shut down either by intimidation or by violence. On universities across the country, only one ideology is acceptable and if you dont go along with that you will be hounded out whether student or teacher. We are living in a day and age where if one does not accept the social changes that have taken place then they are labeled and categorized and branded. The names range from homophobic to deplorable, misogynistic, xenophobic, bigot and on and on. These were the tactics of Goebells and the brownshirts. We see lawlessness now enshrined, where cities and municipalities and even states, say with pride that they will refuse to support the laws of the land and so on. Having said all that, this is what we must expect as we move through the birth pangs and on into the days of tribulation. Christians will be hounded out of society unless they toe the line, many have and will. Most major denominations are now involved in critical compromise and seem to have a great deal of hatred and disdain for those who refuse to compromise with the modern secular views on sexuality and so on. Tough times ahead indeed, but the Lord told is to be of good cheer for He has overcome the world, and He did so by the road that leads through Calvary as we will also………….bro Frank

Successful Führerprinzip only has 2 requirements: a leader absolutely self-assured in his own all-sufficient superiority; and followers unquestioningly willing to accept him so. Those two spirits, pride and idolatry, are never in short supply among humankind.

It would be the beau ideal of every human political faction to operate in the Führerprinzip. Any faction with such a leader, and such a “base,” could gain an unassailable grasp on power…which is, after all, the goal of every political faction. It’s consequently unwise to regard the Führerprinzip as a spiritual danger that could only ever arise from one portion of the human political spectrum.

It seems quite clear where the absolutely-prideful leader and his idolatrous “base” exist in America today. I’d warn that the Führerprinzip operates there.

I’d urge you to take an honest look at today’s socio-political reality, and re-think where the Führerprinzip is “in the atmosphere,” and who is “breath[ing] it in.” All who do are in very great spiritual danger.

In Nazi Germany it was not just these two elements, a third and vital element was a fanatical hatred of a a minority group and a notion that they are are real danger to society and must be “dealt,” with. They are presented as a cancer, or vermin and the majority hate them. Looking at the overall picture and not just the portions that suit our own political perspective ( we all have them) it is clearly seen that the majority overwhelm the minority or the remnant. I think one would have to be blind to not see fanatical hatred of Christians in our society. In every country in the western world it is the same no matter left or right. The notion of sin is despised and people are hounded for even the mere suggestion that their lifestyles are no natural but sinful. When Jesus was crucified, it was because the Herodians and the Pharisees and the Sadusee’s came together, groups of people that despised each other but found common cause in hating Jesus. As in the days of our Lord, so it will be prior to His return. There will be one common enemy on the world, the world will hate them because it first hated Him and we are not greater than our Master. I put it to you that this is what is unfolding……………………bro Frank

          • It’s certainly true that those who uphold Jesus’ teachings will be hated and persecuted.

His central teaching is Who He IS: “The Truth” (John 14:6).

In case we miss the point, Jesus emphasizes that the enemy is “the father of lies,” and “a murderer” (John 8:44). Note that Jesus defines “murder” as angry contempt for others (Matthew 5:22).

I trust you can see that many prominent religious “leaders” of our time (“Pharisees and Saducees”) have joined with secular political “leaders” (“Herodians”) to promote liars and murderers, and to urge Christians to follow them.

The world and the enemy will not persecute “Christians” who do.

“I trust you can see that many prominent religious “leaders” of our time (“Pharisees and Saducees”) have joined with secular political “leaders” (“Herodians”) to promote liars and murderers, and to urge Christians to follow them.” Yes just as I saw that with the last administration who were openly hostile to Christians, hated Israel and introduced gay marriage and instituted nation wide child abuse with trangenderism. I have no interest in being part of any tribe here on earth. I left the established church not to be part of a sub-culture but to part of a counter culture, known to me as the remnant. People who are freed by the Lord do not have to worry about political expediency, they just have to be true to the Lord and to His word. So it is of very little interest to me is people think President Trump is the anti-christ. I had the same lack of interest when people said that about President Clinton. I spent eight years criticizing George Bush for war and torture. The truth is they are all part of the establishment who are actually united in their globalist one world order borderless mind set. I like President Trump better than any of them for the simple fact he is not one of “them.” It is why both sides hate him. He is a disrupter and the powers that be cannot manipulate him. I will be surprised if he lasts his full term or terms, impeachment or assassination. Either way, the establishment will prevail unless God has other plans, and we know if He has other plans then nothing will stop that coming to pass………..bro Frank
