Todays Rome?

Posted by appolus on February 18, 2010

The first three centuries of the church’s history prove that no earthly power can crush it. It is invincible to attacks from without. The witnesses of its sufferings and even its persecutors, become its converts and it grows more rapidly than it can be destroyed. The following period of nearly two hundred years shows that the union of the Church and the State, even when the powers of the mightiest Empire are put into the Church’s hands , do not enable her to save the State from destruction, for, in abandoning the position which her very name implies, of being “called out” of the world and of separation to Christ, she loses the power that comes from subjection to her Lord , exchanging it for an earthly authority that is fatal to herself.”
TODAYS ROME ?
The first three centuries of the church’s history prove that no earthly power can crush it. It is invincible to attacks from without. The witnesses of its sufferings and even its persecutors, become its converts and it grows more rapidly than it can be destroyed. The following period of nearly two hundred years shows that the union of the Church and the State, even when the powers of the mightiest Empire are put into the Church’s hands , do not enable her to save the State from destruction, for, in abandoning the position which her very name implies, of being “called out” of the world and of separation to Christ, she loses the power that comes from subjection to her Lord , exchanging it for an earthly authority that is fatal to herself.” (The Pilgrim Church, page 51)

I believe many “Christians,” pursue that very position today and to the extent that they achieve this marriage with the State they fatally weaken the Church.  Obviously the gates of hell shall never prevail against the true “Church.” But what is the true church and does it have visibility? For instance, in the time frame that this was written about, there were “Donatists,” who worked within the framework of the “Established,” church in order to try and change the church from within. If one looks at today’s Evangelical church or the Protestant world, obviously much of it is not true and genuine Christianity. Therefore, people who are today working within the established church trying to change it, would be akin to Donatists working within the “Catholic Church of the fourth through the seventh centuries. They ultimately failed of course and the Catholic church turned on them. Now, what are the parallels to today’s established church, and is there any parallels? I would argue that there is. Trying to reform an established church that is so intertwined with the world, could very possibly be akin to the Donatists trying to reform the Catholic church.

In every time and every age since the Church began, there has been a struggle with genuinely regenerated people and religious people. This struggle intensified after Constantine and the marriage of the Church with the State. Ever since you have had the major denominations filled with people of the world, baptized into the church at infancy, who are nothing more than members of a club. The Catholic Church dominated and baptized all that it could into its ranks and offered Sacraments as the way to heaven. The Reformation came along and made the same mistakes. They had a portion of truth, yet they continued with the State church model baptizing all into its ranks in infancy. The time is coming for a believers church to arise. A Church full of genuinely regenerated people. A church that hungers and thirsts for the presence of the Living God. A Church that seeks the giver and not the gift. A Church that knows that it is a radical encounter with the Living God that saves and regenerates. Membership will not save, being the child of a believer will not save, there are no grandchildren in heaven, only sons and daughters. May the Church of the living God arise , an army, “A grand army of fragrant saints,” who have an experiential heart knowledge of the Living God.

God is dismantling the Evangelical world and the Pentecostal world and He is exposing the wolves and the hirelings. Today Benny Hinn’s wife filed for divorce. Ted Haggard was exposed a couple of years ago. Todd Bentley was quickly exposed as were those who stood and legitimized them. The Pillars of the health and the wealth, the name it and claim it, the prosperity gospels are teetering and falling. To fall into the hands of the Living God would truly be a frightening thing. Let us pray that the saints of God arise, carrying with them the only thing that counts in this world and the next, the presence of the Living God. This next move of God will be about His presence, and those that hunger and thirst for it. At one time David left the Ark behind and moved on. He was angry with God. Yet, it did not take him long to realize that he was missing the blessing of what the ark represented, the presence of God. Now, finally he goes back only this time he will give due awe and reverence to the handling of “God’s presence,’ the handling of the Ark. Now we see that the Ark is moved in accordance with the Lord’s instruction. Sacrifice is made constantly along the way and David humbles himself before the people and dances before the Lord. His wife despises him for it yet he says that “I will be even more undignified than this.”

A proper awe and reverence of God’s presence was restored. Obedience, sacrifice and humility were the marks. These will be the marks of the Church that arises from the ashes of the Evangelical movement and the Pentecostal movement. Touch the Ark in a fashion not prescribed and death follows. Come to the Lord in obedience, ready to sacrifice, humbling yourself before Him and He will give you life and He will raise you up. May the Church of the Living God arise in obedience and humility, with awe and wonder at the presence of God!

Great post! I think You’re right. Jesus is rescuing His sheep from the hirelings. Sheep aren’t famous for having a lot of sense, but He loves us anyway, and some of us really do need rescuing. All of us, if it comes to that. There are a lot of true sheep in bad religious settings, and He will bring them out. There’s no fixing a church that has gone all “religious.” No reason to have loyalty to an organization or a building–our loyalty needs to be with Him.

There has always been a remnant–usually the “real” church is in the process of killing them in various imaginative ways. That, I am convinced, we will find not to have changed once organizations that have strayed from the Shepherd begin to feel threatened. One more reason it is essential to learn to hear the Shepherd’s voice and know Him and follow Him out into those green pastures.

    Love, Cindy

Your are exactly right Cindy and it will be so again. The visible church that emerges from the ashes of Evangeliclism will be persecuted by what is left of Evangelicalism……Frank

This is what the Lord said to the false prophets…

    Ezekiel 13:22-23

Because with lies you have made the heart of the rightious sad, whom I have not made sad; And strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, by promising him life; Therefore you shall see no more vanity, nor devine devinations; For I will deleiver my people out of your hand; For I will deliever my people out of your hand; and you shall know that I am the Lord.
