The demise of Christendom in the West

Society is changing at a rapid pace as many are aware. The goal posts of ” normal,” are constantly being moved in a never ending downward spiral. The old analogy of putting a frog in hot water and it will jump out, but put a frog in cold water and gradually heat it up and it will stay and die no longer really applies. The pace of spiritual demise has become frantic in the last few years. The enemy knows that time is short and that the Lord is coming back and so the heat is being turned up around the world in order to make way for the lawless one. And so, it is very clear now that ” normal,” depends upon the tone of the culture and Christendom at large is doing nothing to slow down the rapid downward cycle of society, quite the opposite in fact. The salt has lost its saltiness and the light, if it exists at all, is hidden. Much of the Evangelical world is simply a reflection of the world at large as it caters to the needs of it’s worldly adherents.
Stick a finger in the air and see which way the cultural winds blow and you will see the direction of Christendom. Now we have seen dramatic examples of this kind of thing before but it was certainly localized to one country or region of the world. Nazi Germany is a great example of how the state church merely represented the larger culture. Of course this led to many coming out of her and forming the confessing church because they could no longer stomach the state church which was merely a tool in the hand of those who held power. Jesus stands outside of the institutions. For the most part, His genuine followers have always been found outside the walls. What compels a person or multiples of people to make a stand against creeping gradualism ( although it is no longer creeping)? A love, above all else, for the truth. If history is any judge, then the slide into darkness will begin to gather momentum.
The rate of gradualism will give way to leaps and bounds as darkness get’s impatient to be about its business, the vanquishing of light. Institutions begin to merge, the secular and the religious as the pace of moral decline picks up. A few generations of mediocrity typically sets the stage for an abandonment of the truth and how we perceive it.
Rather than being bond-servants to the Truth, society begins to make truth serve itself and molds and changes it by degrees, rejecting any fundamental notion of absolutes. A never-changing truth is not suitable for an ever-changing morally declining society. What will be left in the age ahead? Lovers of Truth or lovers of self. There can be no middle ground, no compromise and those who refuse to compromise with the compromisers will find themselves isolated and rejected by society as a whole, society in all it’s many institutions including the churches.
One group will assuage the conscience of the people, the other will provoke them and anger them. This anger will turn to hatred and this hatred will lead to the same shout they shouted at Jesus ” away with Him.” When the religious world is given the choice between the world and Jesus, it will choose the world. And just as it was prophesied that it would be expedient for one man to die to save the whole country (Jesus) then it will be seen by society as expedient to rid themselves of those irritants amongst them for the sake of peace and harmony. In fact they will believe that they will be carrying out the work of God.
Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. (2Th 2:9-10)
All those who have received the love of the truth are already marked for destruction in the time of the end of ages. This love of the truth is supernatural. Nothing can separate us from it. It is a fire that burns in our bones and no force can quench it. Down through the ages we have seen men and women lose everything in this world they loved dearly for the love of the truth. It is a force within them that was given to them. There is a glory in it, it is the glory of God. This glory, this love of the truth is their way, their truth and their life. It is Jesus Himself and no force, not hell itself can take it from the Lord’s saints.
And so, the Lord’s saints in that day, will stand and fall. They will stand in the righteousness of Christ our Lord. They will stand with the full armor of God. They will wrap themselves with impenetrable light and stand in that evil day. In the eyes of the world they will fall as they are led like lambs to the slaughter. And the world will rejoice, not unlike hell rejoicing as Jesus hung upon the cross dying. Hell perhaps considering it had won the day. Yet just when it appears that the world has gained victory over the true Church and the gates of hell believe that they have prevailed, then shall come Son of man in all His glory and those who remain shall join Him in the air as justice rides on a white horse.
The armies of God, following Jesus. Bringing justice and light to the world and every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father…………bro Frank

Interesting, how the demise of the worldly “church”, parallels the demise of society. It is part of a fallen, temporary kingdom. The gates of hell will not prevail against the eternal kingdom.

Brother Frank, thanks for this perceptive post.
You hit one of the foundations I’ve increasingly learned to insist on, in every context: Jesus IS, as He said, “the Truth.”
There’s no greater DENIAL of Jesus’ absolute Lordship than the one you highlight: treating Truth as a malleable adjunct to the world’s evil purposes. And nowhere is that more standard operating procedure than in human politics.
A great majority of American evangelicals currently follow, rather than The Truth, “truths” propagated by politicians and their allies. If that weren’t foolishness deep enough, the Church gives its heart to the political faction MOST abundant in lies.
It’s only what scripture tells us about the enemy: that the “father of lies” (as Jesus called him) is subtle, constantly seeking whom he may devour, and desires above all else to mislead and destroy, if possible, the Elect.
But I’d never thought about the mechanism of his operating, the gradualism which you highlight so well here. Thank you for that insight. It’s already proving seminal for my thinking about the faith, the Church, and the world: iron sharpening iron.
Blessings, beloved brother !
