Guns and taxes and the mire of politics
Posted by appolus on January 18, 2013
Hi saints, I have been watching the whole gun debate very closely, not so much for the details, for there is nothing new under the sun and we have been around this mountain before. No, my interest lies in the attitudes of Christians to all of these issues, whether it is guns, taxes, politics, rights and so on. Let me just state for the record where I stand on rights and freedoms, at least the freedom that I have through Christ ( which is all that counts, believe me brothers and sisters)
There are powerful forces that are manipulating the most basic of instincts, whether it is on the ” left,” or on the ” right.” Men and woman of God must only be driven by the Holy Spirit and not the cultural winds that blow nor the lobbyists who have financial or political interests in stirring up the crowd. One side is being pitted against the other. Christians should not be on one side or the other, we should be a counter-culture, not a sub-culture. God transcends cultures and nations. The Body of Christ is multi-national, from every tribe and every tongue and every nation. Our identity should be found in God alone and the Body. Let nations and kingdoms ( ethnos, where we get our English word ethnic) fight and war with each other, but it’s not our war. We are the sons and daughters of peace and we represent another kingdom to the peoples of the world.
The freedom that I revel in, is the same freedom that my Chinese brother and sister revels in. It’s the same freedom that my brothers and sisters in Iran revel in. It’s the same freedom that the Apostle Paul reveled in. It’s the freedom that was wrought, not by the point of a knife or a bullet or a bayonet , it’s the freedom that was wrought by the point of a nail. The nail that held Christ to the cross of Calvary. All other freedoms are political and can come and go at the whim of men. If people want to put their trusts in men and guns, I do not have a problem with that, that is between them and the Lord. My reading of Scripture brings me to the conclusion, and this is just my conclusions, that I am to be ” Anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication and thanksgiving make my requests known to God, and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard my heart and mind through Christ Jesus.”
Here is a piece from a dear sister in Christ, which I can say amen to………………………….
This is not made in anger, but with a broken heart that is concerned. And before you read this I want you to know I’m praying for you. I only write this to give you something to think about. We who name the name of God on their knees need to get off Facebook long enough to pray through and get over being mad at President Obama and the democrats. All this anger and outrage reveals our trust isn’t really in God as much as it is in being able to keep our guns, and our liberties, to do what we want. What liberties? The right to pay taxes to support a government that is increasingly godless. Where is the freedom in that?
What about what God wants? We are warned to not be railing with contempt on others, especially our leaders but to pray for them. Maybe if we spent more time praying for God to save our president, rather than criticizing him it would be different. I watch Obama and I must admire his willingness to stand up to everyone who disagrees with him and not back down. Right or wrong, I think he really believes all the stuff he says. And he doesn’t care what others think. His life reflects that faith in his convictions.
But does ours as Christians? We say we trust God, yet we fret over what is going on in Washington. All the guns in the world won’t keep us safe if God isn’t watching over us. As Christians, so many sound like they are willing to fight to the death to keep their freedom to own guns, and defend the constitution. We should be on our knees fighting the darkness in the world by seeking God to fill us with His light and strength. Remember, His ways are not our ways. If we really trust God we won’t be railing and mocking and scorning our President, we will be praying for him and drawing closer to God because the times are changing and only faith in HIM will keep us-not our guns. That is not saying it’s wrong to have one, it’s not. But to hear and see so much politics from the mouths of so many Christians who at the same time have so little to give glory to the Lord who saves and keeps us is heartbreaking.
The Bible says sweet and bitter water shall not flow from the same fountain. Remember Egypt, folks. Remember how comfortable the people were there. God had a better place and because of the hardness of the human heart willing to live in ease and not step out in faith, He had to let it get bad in Egypt before they cried out to leave. Look at America-this country’s leadership mourns the loss of children shot by guns in school, but not the thousands butchered daily in their mother’s wombs and thrown out with the trash. Total hypocrisy. Indefensible. She wants God out of the courtroom, out of the classroom, out of the public square, to the point how can we as God-fearing people ask Him to bless this nation with a straight face? Then has the nerve to ask what happened and why did this happen in Connecticut? When God, Who is Love, Light, Truth, GOOD, is rejected, that opens the door to hatred, darkness, lies and evil. It’s the only thing left, Beloved.
beloved, this is NOT our home, it’s just where as Christians we are stationed, in God’s army. This place is so alien to every thing God is. It’s a place where good is called evil and evil is called good. We are to be more concerned about building HIS Kingdom, under His leadership, by His Spirit, not desperately trying to hold onto a kingdom built on sinking sand. We had hurricane Sandy devastate the Northeast. Sandy. Think about it. Out of all the hurricanes we had, none were really a problem until we named one Sandy. And God who controls everything including the weather, despite what the global warming crowd say, there is no mother nature. But God allowed that hurricane to become huge. And we missed the message. Our nation isn’t built on a rock anymore, it’s built on sand. We had evil unleashed on Sandy Hook Elementary. Again with the Sandy. This nation has turned from the old paths, is removing the markers of the right ways as fast as it can, knocking out the foundation and building on sand of humanistic selfishness.
The Word of God says “Cursed be the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm and whose heart departs from the Lord” (Jer 17:5) “Woe to the rebellious children, says the Lord, that take counsel but not of Me, and that cover with a covering, but not of My Spirit that they may add sin to sin. That walk down to Egypt and have not asked at My Mouth to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh and trust in the shadow of Egypt!” I can’t explain exactly what the word cursed means, except it’s bad because it separates us from God’s presence! It causes those who trust in “flesh” or in people, strength in people’s numbers, human effort and wisdom, which always fails to fall flat on their face in defeat. If the world is more real to you than God, Beloved, time on your knees can change that.
Oh, how many times are we going to listen to the lying voice of the enemy whispering his lies that keep us discouraged, hopeless, scared, feeling alone, hurt, and bitter? He doesn’t care what we do as long as we don’t humble ourselves and pray and seek God. God is warning Jeremiah concerning the people– You trust in the world, in its leaders, (*else you wouldn’t be campaigning for one man against another). You trust in yourself and your ability to defend yourself, guide yourself, else you’d be on your knees asking the Lord what to do, what to think, where to go? Egypt is a type of the world. We take counsel (advice, guidance) by turning on the news, the pundits, and one of my favorites was Rush, so I’m preaching to myself here too folks. Mainly to me, but my heart breaks for God’s people. Out of the heart the mouth speaks.
And when so much of what comes out of our mouth is railing and ranting against the government we reveal our faith isn’t in God. We reveal we fear these changes, don’t like them and our attachment is still to this world more than to Jesus. Oh, Beloved I am not railing on you. I don’t have that right nor would I want it. It’s hard, I know! We were born here, raised here, it’s ingrained so deeply in us as is our human nature. That’s why Jesus had to die on the cross, and be raised from the dead and send back the Holy Spirit when He went to sit down at the right hand of God.
He taught those disciples daily, walked physically with them every day for three and a half years but they could not be what they were to be with Jesus here in the flesh. It took the Holy Spirit coming back and filling them, living in them, to keep them, guide them, and empower them to do His will. He knows we can’t do it but He really wants to help us! That’s why He pleads “Come unto ME all ye that are heavy laden, I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and earn of Me for I Am meek and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls for My Yoke is easy and My burden is light.” It’s light because He carries the load and just wants us to walk with Him, cooperate with Him.
When He saves us He calls us to come out from among them and be separate. That also means mentally and spiritually we need the ties that bind us to this world cut so we cry COME Lord Jesus!!! I don’t want to start a debate, or invite outraged comments from those who would defend their right to speak against the government, to protect their liberties. But as Christians, we need to stop and seriously consider some things. What liberties are we fighting for? Whose kingdom is worth fighting for? Oh that all that passion and zeal were directed at Jesus and His kingdom! We are faced with a choice. I pray God help us understand and see! If we seek to save our life in this present time, in this nation, fighting for temporary liberties, we will risk losing that which is eternal and infinitely more valuable. We have a better place He has prepared for us. In His House are many mansions, streets of gold, eternal peace, no wars, no death, no sickness, no growing old, no hatred or fighting, or racial stuff, and best of all, most important of all, JESUS is there people. None of this stuff is worth losing the chance to bow at His feet and look in His flaming eyes and see that love that so consumed Him He died for us! Don’t be cheated, beloved. We can take our divided hearts to Him and ask Him to unite them to fear and be devoted to Him. He’s already told us it’s the Holy Spirit that pours the love of (and for God) in our hearts…..
